The word on the street is the PS3 will upscale dvd's to 1080p
That's getting to be a lot of bang for your buck!:p

I thought it would upconvert dvd's but not to 1080p:confused:. Still a good bang for your buck though! Only issue with non gamers will be its audio output won't be dolby hd.

How do you mean, "won't be dolby HD"?

I read somewhere that the ps3 delivers D/D & DTS audio and assumed since there was no mention of the DD plus or True DD HD it wouldn't benefit non gamers, such as myself:) . If the ps3 will do the audio as well then whats the point of the other mfg's selling these $1000.00 plus blu ray players? There must be a downfall or drawback:eek: .

*Sorry for the confusing 2nd post:eek: !! *

According to an Audioholics article about HDMI 1.3 back in August, the PS3 will make use of capabilities added in HDMI 1.3. So it is tough to say if the PS3 will use Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD.

As far as DVD upscaling goes for the PS3, it is not an available feature. I did find this article about ways to view all other 1080p media and some other audio file playback capabilities.

Thank You for the links;) . I couldn't see how other BR mfg's will charge twice or triple the cost of PS3 and compete with Sony. The links cleared things up, hence its price:) !

The Playstation 3 decodes Dolby True HD internally, then converts it to high resolution multichannel PCM output over HDMI.

What does this mean?, it means that you don't have to buy a receiver that decodes True HD. At this point there is no such receiver, but many HDMI capable receivers can decode hi-res PCM. I do not know if the PS3 is capable of decoding DTS-HD as far as the hardware. I am pretty sure that it does not decode DTS-HD out of the box, as a firmware upgrade may be possible.

And lastly, I forgot to mention this as I was tired and forgot what this thread was started for. The Playstion 3 does NOT upconvert DVD to 1080p, only 480p. It only serves as a standard progressive scan player for DVD. However it does 1080p for Blu-Ray and select games.

The PS3 comes with the component video cables, but not the HDMI cable, though it was rumured the $600 version of the PS3, the one with the 60gig HDD, would come with the HDMI cable, I do not believe it will come with the system anyway.

OK, the PS3 can decode DTS-HD, apparently out of the box, so it does basically everything and more than the other players on the market, aside from upcoverting standard dvd beyond 480p.
