Onkyo receivers haven't changed much over the years (in terms of how their functions work). A long time ago I had an SV-525 which is in the same series as the 414.
First, you must have an antenna connected (whether it is a simple piece of wire or an actual antenna). You then tune to the station you want to hear and while it is playing, press and hold the pre-set number you want to store that station under. It takes a second or two and when the number stops flashing it is stored.
