newbie help with dvd connect quality

hi all....first timer

i am getting an hdtv and a dvd player, both sony, that have 3 option for connections.

sales help at sony said that for progressive scan a component set-up(Y,Pr,Pb) is BY FAR and very noticable, superior to s-video.

what are you opinions of this?,,,and what exactly does "progressive scan" do that is better?
