Starting September 1st 2008, Cinemax will become the first 24-hour HD premium channel. HBO says it’ll broadcast everything from movies, Cinemax documentaries to on-air promos and short programming in 100% True HD (1080i).

At first I thought it was talking about Dolby TrueHD and I thought wow, that's awesome... but then I read the article... I guess 1080i is better than 720p broadcasts... or even no HD at all.

I thought the exact same thing as Glocks, and I was getting kind of excited too. Oh well, yay 1080i. :D You might want to edit the thread name to avoid confusion.

Sorry about that... it was probably a bad decision to use the term in the title.

But one thing I did want to illustrate was the horribleness of the term true HD as mean a video resolution. (Yeah, horribleness is a real word in the Hagar dictionary)

I would have hoped once Dolby adopted it as their audio format it would stopped being used as marketing speak for 1080P. But the offices of the Home Box Office, (otherwise known as the second office of the ATSC) decided true HD now means 1080i.

Thank God sales and marketing doesn't get to write technical standards.

true HD reminds me of a politician talking about true freedom... or true anything for that matter, it's a euphemism for ours not theirs.

I feel a rant coming on, I better go lie down. :)

Whoopee!!! Now I can get my late night Skinemax fix in 1080i!! Nothing like seeing all the upclose details of the aging softcore porn starlet who's wearing just a bit too much makeup....

I agree with Wayde, using the term "true HD" has about as much meaning to me as published contrast ratios for displays.

I doubt any of us see "true" HD via any broadcast signal like cable or satellite. Local OTA may come the closest. It will probably be a very long time before we do.

Give me GB/second please!

The tough thing is whether it was bad for Dolby to adopt that name... or if they had it in trademark process before the whole 1080p items came to popularity. It's a silly trademark because it's made up of such common words in the industry.

I still don't associate that name with Dolby. I tend to think of it as a video discussion when I hear the term.

How contradictory can one phrase be?

true HD

George Carlin would be all over this one:D

Nice, but not the first channel to do this. TMN-HD has been for years, and now has two 24-hr HD channels. Mind you the quality of programming is probably not as good as Cinemax.

I don't think they could actually broadcast in 1080p without serious implications. This would require everyone to have a cable box or TV that could resolve 1080p. I know my equipment wouldn't be able to do it!
