i have heard tid bits of info about some hoo-rah over monster cable and that they were given a bad rap for the cost of their products when competitors offerred products of similar or better performance for much much less than the Monster part.

Would anyone here have a link to the news thread or article that this was about? I would be most interested in reading this.

the other day I priced (I think) a 6m component lead that was close to $500 (australian) !!..rediculous.

cheers

Well, Monster does make good stuff, it's just overpriced because 1. They're Greedy and 2. That huge marketing budget has to come from somewhere.

And if you think that is rediculous, you haven't seen some of the REALLY crazy esoteric cables. Monster is a bargain compared to some of these other offerings.

Take Transparent Audio Cable...over $20k for a pair of speaker cables for their "top" model!. Not to mention all the rediculous claims they make that you pay for. It really sickens me.

thanks for the input guys. Have Already read and re-read the cable info on this site.

Understand there are even more greedy souls out there selling cable at prices the average Joe could use as a down payment on a house ...

But if anyone out there that has a link to the article I previously inquired about ...?

The Audioholics review isn't good enough? How about a quote from the USA Today article from "Sound and Vision?"
Tom Nousaine, a contributing technical editor for Sound & Vision magazine, says he's done several tests comparing high-end cables with cheaper wire. "Nobody has ever been able to identify the specialty cable from the junk box stuff," he says. "The best place to buy speaker cable is Home Depot."

Remember, the media sends whoever is available for a story, not the most qualified reporter. Also beware of sacred cows. Big advertisers in newspapers get good press or at least no bad press.

A wire is a wire is a wire and if you can't measure differences between them, you aren't going to hear differences. Unless you're a reporter named Michelle who has no clue. ;)

Yes, and no ;)

As you will see from the data base at this site, Clint et al, did measure differences between every wire. Don't think there is one that measured exactly the same as another cable.
BUT, they are well below the threshold of detection :D

And below the threshold of performance being worth the exorbitant prices.

or something like that. ;)

What's even more fun is buying Monster Cable (14/4 or 16/4) on eBay for less than many competitors and getting a high quality CL3 speaker cable that is sheathed in a rubber jacket that is incredibly flexible and easy to pull, has a rip string that actually works, and each wire has a jacket that strips very easily as it should.

Good cables at ridiculous prices is easy to blame on Monster, but at least they work well (generally), and the public continues to buy them and stores continue to sell them. But, stores really aren't charged a lot more for Monster cable, they just sell them for a lot more - because the public is crazy enough to pay those prices.

Who's to blame?

Meh - I love their CI-Pro cable and will use it for many years, but only if I can get it near cost and not pay 'retail'.

Let's not forget the effects of hydrogen in the air and the effect on cables it has....you know...right along with placing furbies around your speakers, lit lighters in their furry outstretched hands, in clusters of 30 to give rock music that "live" feeling.

...I have no idea why I'm posting this...

Because it is a free country, and we can say whatever we want?

Or maybe it is Friday night, it is getting late, and we don't have a sweet somebody whispering into our ear?

Me? I am downloading files computer files and decided that posting on the board is better than looking at porn (oh, god, I must be getting old... I like talking better than peeking), or playing computer games.

Heh...I always come up with weird posts when it's late.

It wasn't a post, but the weirdest I ever had was a friend called me on the phone and I actually fell asleep on the phone, and started rambling off nonsensical things...I had a rant about the exploding steaks the school cafeteria were serving, and the textbooks were defective since the letters kept falling out of them....

And no...drugs were not a part of it...though I wish it was so I had an excuse for being that weird :p

Monster fist

I've just finished replaced all my Monster RCA cables and my level of anger at this point is quite high. I won't bother getting into what I hear or don't hear using my new cables compared to the monster crap.

What I will say is that the piss-poor construction is what drove me to rip out all 6 cables I was using for SACD playback and my subwoofer cable. I’ve had some intermittent subwoofer issues and finally tracked it down do a cable that is less than a year old. I treat all of my equipment with great respect and this crap was simply falling apart. One by one, I started removing the screw-on jacket to reveal bad soldering, stray wires that never got soldered and overall flimsy construction.

It is a free country (sort of) and I don’t give a crap if some Monster troll comes by here and views my statements. I cannot think of another company that is built on BS more than monster. That being said, Best Buy are the commie biatches of Monster. One of their sales-fascists tried to sell me Monster the other day and I gave him a quiet earful that had him running for mommy. Another employee heard some of what I was saying and I suddenly felt like I was standing before Lenin and Stalin talking about democracy and capitalism. I’ve been fisted severely and won’t recover for quite some time.

End of Rant.

I get my Monster stuff really really cheap so I use it... It is good for impressing your friends, just like having Bose (I don't)...
