Today I had a chance to listed to both and I'd like to share my experiences
Source:pC
DAC: FiiO E10

Music: 44/16 Flac:
Led Zeppelin - Black Dog, Misty Mountain Hop
Pink Floyd - Money, Wish you were here, Time
Beethoven 5th and 3rd symphony
1812 Overture

MDR-SA5000: Very comfortable fit, good build quality and materials - they are very big, but very light and very comfortable
Bass is somewhat lacking and highs just a tad fatiguing, but overall very good, neutral, precise and somewhat cold/neutral sound..
They sold now for about $350 - Not best for buck, but pretty decent overall.
Black Dog sounded really good, but the soundstage for classics was not there

Due to 70ohm impedance - mobile use is limited and to get to levels closer to reference you must use an amp.

ATH-M50:
These are like SA5000 complete opposite - heavy and very uncomfortable. Way to much bass for me - some may like - sorry but not me
Overall - the sound can be described and very punchy and warm, but I liked the calm and neutral sound of sony
These are much easier load and could be used on the road - folding design helps keep them relatively compact while not in use.

That said, I still prefer my Fostex T20RP over both of them :D

but since the cable and pads need replacement, I might as well get T50RP on sale now on B&H for $74
