The UMPC is an ultracompact computer running Windows XP with a touchscreen and wireless connectivity. There is definitely a marketing push to have this unit take on the mobile entertainment device in terms of its ability to play back video and audio. UMPC devices are expected to retail for between $600 and $1,000.

Microsoft sure made allot of hype over this and I remain unimpressed. Smaller then a notebook bigger then a PDA how innovative. Though the price range is in the same with some high end remotes so if they could have added IR and RF functionality then I would be very interested.

I love the idea, I've always wanted to integrate a touch screen PC into my car, with something like this it would be perfect, who needs the fold out dvd player when you can have a pc to do even more

And who needs that when you can drive off a cliff or into a chestnut tree? :D

As functional as it may (or may not) be, that thing is UGLY!

I would rather see a better designed version of this released from a company like Apple or someone who values R&D!!

It'll look good, run well - and no one else's systems will be able to work or integrate into it. Apple is great - if you use all Apple stuff.

Think they'll make a way to hard wire it into your vehicle's electrical system? It would be a pain to have to remove it every day to recharge the battery. Either way I don't think the computer is going to agree with the MN winters up here. Electronics don't seem to work right when it's below zero.

if they don't make a car charger for it, just get a dc/ac power converter

I mean it is a PC made by M$ what does one expect.

It is just an over priced PDA. Why would you need a full version of XP on the go. I dont see the point. As for home theater use its worthless. To expensive for a remote to limited for a HTPC.

My Mac runs as a HTPC now but and I am a heavy user of both and the PC wins when it comes to HTPC soley on the fact of cost. It would cost you $400 to get a Video Card that can docode/Display HD content. Plus who wants to play oregon trail on thier HDTV when they can play PC games!!!!

Well I live in MN, and I can tell you that we haven't seen winter for the last few years now. Global warming is...sorry it's a different thread.
