just bought a yamaha V765 receiver and now need speakers and sub to go with it.

-(5.1 setup)

-budget $800ish

-80% movies 20% music

-20' x 30' room (the room is fairly open on two sides)

-also, as much as i hate it, i need smaller speakers that i can mount on the wall/ceiling.

-floor/stand/bookshelf speakers are not an option.

thanks for your time

speakers

I hate to recommend a brand I own as I feel like I am trying to validate my own choices....but, you have a very large room and your preference is HT vs music which suggests efficient brands like Klipsch which lend themselves to your needs.....another horn small speaker is made by HSU.....I would not recommend a Klipsch sub as their good ones are too expensive....HSU and SVS make wonderful subs that can fill the space....Unfortunately, I do not think you can fill that space for less than $1,200 buying new....

Denying laws of physics never ended well....
In very gross way:
Sound is vibration of air. Speakers are mechanicals devices producing these vibrations and they are tend to dissipate quicker in larger/open space. To fill it you must use bigger & more powerful speakers.
So smaller speakers=smaller sound. Doesn't matter that your budget is...

yeah, i understand my room is not set up for the best home theater by any means. this will be my first set up that is not 'out of the box' so my ears are probably not as keen as most of you guys here.

i'm really looking for the best set-up that i can get given the criteria.
i can most likely go up to $1k if it will make much difference, but that's about all i can do as i doubt my rookie ears can tell much difference in a $1k package or $2k package with how my living room is arranged.

thanks for the feedback

Well jw,
I can suggest a decent setup, but then again it'll still won't be perfect due to your constrains
2 pairs of these:

1 of these:

and I hope you are ready to commit to at least one big speaker - sub.
With such small speakers, receiver x-over has to be set pretty high at 100-110 Hz and sub HAS to be placed right in front of you or as close as possible.
this sub:

blows your budget a bit, but it's a bare minimum... Option b: would be to get Pair of Dayton Sub-120 subwoofers - two of them can probably pull-off your huge room.....

What's going to grab your (your words) "rookie ears" and shake you by them is having enough subwoofer to properly fill that volume. You need to calculate the cubic footage of the entire space and then contact one or two of the big subwoofer specialists and have them size you a sub or possibly two. I'd contact SVSounds and Hsu Research for the sub.

The second issue is flush mounting the bookshelf speakers. To flush mount you'll need sealed or front ported speakers. Sealed speakers aren't really for large rooms but as long as you don't sit more than about 12-15' away you might be able to get away with an SVSounds PB12-NSD 5.1 package (~$1200) backed up by a second sub. There are other options but they start north of there.

Sholling=good advice.....and it's problematic due to 600 sf area involved not to mention the probable high ceilings usually associated with areas that large and even more common area if your home has an open floor plan....you might want to give us those paremeters for additional consideration

ok so i've decided to stretch my budget a little more than originally planned. my new upper limit is $1200 for speakers and sub ( i knew this was gonna happen, lol)

sholling, i've had someone else also recommend that SVS package on another forum, so i guess that would be my lead horse right now.

but i'm still open to any other suggestions since i've increased my budget a little

my ceilings are 9 ft BTW, and my seat is approx 10 ft from tv

thanks

With that space I'd go with the 12" sub version of the SVS package and then start saving for a second sub. Tell your wife it can be your Christmas present. ;)
