In ceiling speakers

Hi Audioholics!!

I'm looking for some in ceiling surround speakers rear left and rear right channel as the rear of the room is actually a large sliding glass door that exits out to my patio so there's really no room for wall mounting or stands.

There are so many! Brands of speakers I don't know where to start. I have Left and Right front floor standing speakers, a cabinet centre speaker under the TV and a subwoofer.

My budget is $200 per speaker. There are no audio stores in my town that sell a range of ceiling speakers I think the common speakers I see is Jensen and I sorta don't want to go down that path. My current knowledge and audio listening experience of any source of audio is I own a Bose soundlink2 which I am blown away by sound the tiny thing produce's!! I own the ... Bowers and Wilkins P7 on ear headphones which are bloody amazing!! Got to listen to some Klipsch reference tower speakers and the B&W panorama2

I'm big on music! Always play it either in direct mode or 2 channel with SW.

So really what I would like to know is.... What are the best picks of in ceiling surround speakers for around $200 that will blow me in movies.

I've read great reviews on Klipsch, B&W, Kef's, Cambrigde, Krix, Polk, Jammo, definitive technology and listening to them first is impossible as I think the top in ceiling speaker they sell in my town they have on display is probably Jensen or Jammo.

Anyways thanks for taking your time to read my email. Appreciate any feed back

Please see picture attached of my current room set up

Can anyone please recommend me some

Best Regards

Hi David,

Welcome to the forum.

I'm looking for some in ceiling surround speakers rear left and rear right channel

I have Left and Right front floor standing speakers, a cabinet centre speaker under the TV and a subwoofer.
Sounds like you are looking for Surrounds and intend to position them where Back speakers would go (towards the back of room). The correct placement for the Surround and Back speakers is like this, (with subwoofer only to show that it is a 7.1 system and not for location guidance)

So, if you place the Surround at the location meant for Back speakers, it will not be optimal. Further, using ceiling speakers for any of the surround or back speakers is a compromise and would conflict with the next quote.

Last but not the least, Surround for music should be tone matched with the Left, Right Front floor standing speakers and cabinet Center. It is generally believed that a matching bookshelf speaker from the series will best serve music needs. On the other hand, dipole speakers are considered to provide a more pleasing ambient envelope for movie watching. It is not as critical to tone match Surround and Back speakers for movies. You will need to pick a preferred setup.

Hey!,

Top response man, really appreciate it and respect the knowledge you've shared with me.

Surrounds won't be a problem for music as I only play music in direct or front left and right +sub.

Returning to my question I would just like some ceiling speakers to replace the original back left and right book shelves/ surrounds speakers. Could you recommend me any?

Kind regards

David

I've been very happy with the 8" Monoprice ANGLED in-ceiling speakers. They sound much better than their standard 8" ceiling speakers. From there I would probably go to the Sonance 832R model.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sonance-832R-3-Way-8-Inceiling-Polypropylene-Woofer-Speakers-Reg-1000-pair-/251988095890?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3aaba93392

They aren't available new for anywhere near the eBay pricing, but they are probably my favorite in-ceilings for the money. Sound good, handle power well, pivoting 8" speaker assembly.
