Hi,

I want to setup a home theater in my media room. My budget for the whole setup is around 6k. I already have 75 inch TV, so that budget is only for all the audio products and a receiver. My room dimensions are 14X14.5 sqft with a 8 ft ceiling. The viewing distance is around 12 ft.i have one reclining sofa which is backed upto the wall.I am noob with respective to these audio products. I went to best buy magnolia and did hear to a couple of products. I initially liked the definitive tech 5.1.2 bipolar series with the atmos modules sitting on the floor speakers. But ever since my wife pointed out that the voice from the center is very hallow and not crisp, I am not liking it. I also heard the bowers and wilkins cm9 series with 5.1.4 setup which both of us liked very much but it costs around 10k for the whole setup.
I will mostly using this room for movies and at times for music. Please suggest some good combinations for my budget

Might want to share any WAF limitations, especially for the sub(s) :) Do you not want to put speakers in/on your ceiling for a proper 5.1.2 or 5.1.4 setup?

Spend at least 75% of the budget on the speakers, alot the other 25% for the AVR and cables, maybe a little more if you need a source component.

For receiver, I would be looking at midrange units from Yamaha, Marantz, and Denon, from the $1k to 1.5k range. The Denon AVR-X4300 would fit the bill nicely. For speakers, I would skip tower speakers and look at bookshelf speakers. In your budget, look at Revel Concerta2 m16s, Ascend Acoustics Sierras, KEF LS50s, Wharefedale Jades, SVS Ultras, something from RBH; I would go for any of those long before Deftech or B&W, but there are a lot of good choices in your budget. Skip tower speakers because you would likely be exchanging quality for quantity if you shelled out for towers in this range. There is just not much sense in getting a tower speaker in a room like that. For subwoofers, I would just get this Hsu ULS-15 mk2 dual drive system, which will not be beat at that price for the performance it offers. If you really want monster deep bass, get two of these.

Since your back is against the wall, I would not shell out for expensive surround speakers. Don't place the surround speakers behind you, I would place them to the sides. Use in-ceiling speakers for height speakers if you are thinking about going for an Atmos system. Getting a good surround sound in your listening position might be tricky.

I have the Ascend Acoustics Sierra Horizon with RAAL center, which seems as good to me as it's reviews. You could go with Ascend Sierra 2's for left and right speakers to match. That would set you back about $3K. You could run Ascend Sierra 1s for surrounds to save a bit of money.

I am using the PSB Imagine XA Atmos add on modules, and they work very well.

The subs in the DT bi-polar speakers are not a substitute for good external subs. Dual subs is a great idea. If well-placed, dual subs can provide a smoother frequency response through a wider seating area. Your room is not very large. A couple of good 12" ported subs would easily fill the room with plenty of bass. Consider the Rythmik LV12R, SVS PB-2000, or HSU VTF-3 MK5 HP. Right now, Outlaw Audio has a tremendous deal on dual Ultra-X12 subwoofers for $1049 shipped.

Thanks for the replies guys. Is there a place where i can demo of the products which you mentioned?
Also,I visited a different bestbuy/magnolia store today and asked the rep to show me a good home theater in the price range of 5k. He demoed a couple of them and we finally liked this combination. We have decided to let go of the atmos ceiling speakers because the speakers + cost for installation would be pretty high. This setup is going just a little over my budget.

What do you think about this combination? Also, how is the svs SB-2000 sub when compared to JL-Audio-Dominion-d110. The Dominion is just $200 more than the sb-2000. So, I don't mind spending that additional amount if Dominion is better than SB-2000.

Ascend and Hsu are internet direct only, as SVS used to be before adding a few B&M dealers. They each have various arrangements for in-home trials of 30 days or more with return privileges (some include freight, some do not). PSB, Revel, KEF, RBH & Wharfdale perhaps you could see if any dealers are in your area from their website listings; if you post your location maybe someone can point such places out in your area. I've been extremely satisfied with my Ascend speakers and dealing with them. The owner/designer even answers questions himself still. You might add Philharmonic Audio and Salk Audio as two other worthy ID speaker companies to consider unless a store audition is a must.

As far as Magnolia and BB audio setups/rooms go, not impressed with the one I used to live near (as well as their staff's audio knowledge being very limited). I'd much rather test in my own room and knowing I set it up correctly. YMMV with the stores in your area, tho.

I'd definitely take the Denon over the Pioneer avr for the Audyssey XT32 feature particularly.

The JL subs tend to be overpriced for their performance IMO; the SVS will dig deeper (spec'd 19-200Hz +/- 3dB on the SVS, the JL is 27-110 Hz +/-1.5dB with a -3dB of 25 hz, -10dB of 21 hz). The JL retails for $1000 and the SVS for $700; maybe if the JL could be had for less than the SVS, but I certainly wouldn't pay $200 more for a smaller sub. You might also consider buying from SVS directly as they offer benefits that BB/Magnolia doesn't (but on the other hand no store to make returns/exchanges at).

ps I deleted my previous post as it posted while I was still composing/editing. Thanks for adding your location.

For speakers, it's easy for any of us to recommend what WE love. I used to own many other brands. Now I own RBH speakers. So it's easy for me to recommend RBH.

Someone who owns Revel, KEF, B&W, PSB, Klipsch, Paradigm, Ascend, SVS, etc. would find it easy to recommend the speakers they own and love.

But for most people spending $5K+, it's probably easier to buy the speakers that they can listen to first.

If you are in Seattle, I would look suggest adding GoldenEar to your list, there are a ton of options in that range. I, of course, am going to suggest this, because I use their speakers, but I would also demo as many different brands as you can in your area to determine what sounds best for you.

www.goldenear.com
https://www.goldenear.com/dealerlocator

I would look at
  • Triton 5 F/R
  • SCXXL Center Channel
  • Invisa 7000 Atmos Speakers if you are able to do in wall
  • Either the Aon 2/3 or SuperStat 50 for Surrounds.
Even with the Denon 4200 you still should have about 1k left for a subwoofer. I am assuming also that the dealer gives you a good discount, if not and those are the speakers you decide on, I can connect you with my dealer as I have done this for a few people on this site.

Do you have experience listening to good speakers or did you just decide you want to get some good speakers?
I ask because if you are starting "cold" you might be enticed by certain speaker characteristics that you will later determine are not that great after all. For example, often people are wowed by stronger bass or treble because it catches their attention. Only sometime later do they realize they are missing some of the richness of the mid-range.
Is this for HT only or music? What percentage of which if it will be mixed?

With the exception of the Denon receiver, none of that would be my first choice for a home theater system. The SVS sub isn't bad, but it should be used for applications where the subwoofer size must be small. B&W speakers are not bad, but there are certainly more accurate speakers that cost less.

So, I finally purchased my first home theater from magnolia. The store manager was very helpful and gave me a pretty good deal for the whole package.

Here is my configuration:-

Bowers & Wilkins - CM Center 2 S2
Bowers & Wilkins Cm8 S2 side speakers
Bowers & Wilkins DS3 for the rears
SVS SB-2000
Pioneer SCLX701 receiver
PMX MR-4000 home theater power management.

I also made the purchase with the best buy card which I applied today. So will be getting another 600 back in rewards

How do you figure $600.00? Is there a promo because the rewards program doesn't give you a 10% return on dollars spent? I am only Silver which is the middle tier and you get $5.00 for every $250.00 spent?

At my local Magnolia, I wasn't able to get my price down, but after talking with the manager for a while, he doubled the BB gift card that was supposed to be $150 up to $300.

So, it seems to me that the BB staff has some leeway in these types of deals.
