I'm having my lcd installed on the wall. I'm running some of my hdmi cables through the wall. Can i run just any s-video, component cables in the wall or are there any in-wall rated cables i can run?

you can pretty much run any through the wall. May be better to have in-wall rated cables for some reasons but in reality it doesnt matter. Especially if your just running cables up the wall from a cabinet to a tv or something.

Any wiring installed inside a wall is covered by the NEC. Any wiring.

Video cabling is covered by Art. 820. Other than CATV, video cables must be rated cm or higher (cmp for plenums). Make sure your cabling is so designated before closing/inspection. Cheers.

I'm confused, are you saying the wires (e.g. monster audio, video cables) i mentioned are fine even if it isn't in-wall rated? Also, what does cmp and plenums mean? I am totally new at this.

Cheers.

A plenum is a heat duct (supply or return) in a dwelling structure.

Cmp (and cm) are ratings for cables specifically designated for in wall use. Cl is a rating used for in wall speaker wire.

If the cables are not imprinted with the necessary ratings, they are not suitable for in wall use. Properly rated cabling is not that more expensive, so fear not. Cheers.

Thanks for your reply John. Someone also mentioned something about using cat5e cable. What is this used for? In my case I have dvd's players, video recorder, receiver and is possible connections for the computer.

Cheers
