Help choosing DVD player

My wife and I are in the market for a new DVD player, and I'm not sure how much we should spend or what would fit best into the system we have. We have a Yamaha htr-5890 reciever, 7.1, no HDMI; and a Sony KDS-R60XBR1 TV, inputs galore.

My biggest concern is in being able to play HD DVDs when they start coming out, and getting the best display/sound from the DVDs out now.

Right now, we're ready to spend up to $400 on a new DVD player. We could wait a month or two and up that to $1000. Any suggestions?

Other Qestions: Am I really missing out by not having HDMI on the reciever? Can I run HDMI straight from the DVD player to the TV and still have the sound through the reciever? Will the Playstation III, when it comes out, have the DVD playback quality I'm looking for? (Fry's salesman told me it would.)

Thanks! Any info would be appreciated :)

Sorry, just realized I was in the wrong forum. I'm moving this to the beginners and audiophytes forum.
