Headphone amp connection

I recently purchased the Schiit (Valhalla model) headphone amp. And no, this is no Schiit. I know the connection will be to tape loop out(h/k 645 AVR) but have concerns about components with HDMI hookups. I've read that due to HDMI that the headphone amp will not work connected to the tape out loop. Is this true?

Usually yes. Do you have preouts or a headphone socket?

I do have preout and headphone input. If I use the preout the AVR will do the volume duty.

I would use the pre outs.
