HD Digital - what is it good for?

Over the years, I have bought several BD and DVD discs which include a digital copy which can be streamed.

I have held on to the slip with the code to activate the digital copy on the assumption that one day I will happen into the info to determine why I should activate it. However, it has been a couple of years and I am still clueless!:(

Typically the expiration is 2-3 years so there is no immediate concern about expiration.
However, I am now realizing that some of the earlier ones are getting close to expiration. Some that I got from Target are presumable no good since Target dropped their attempt at a streaming media service.

So do you use these?
What for?
I figure worst case is I can share them with someone else (who does not have the disc). Is there a drawback to doing this?

I don't mess with any of it. I simply rent BD's from Netflix. Very reliable. Inexpensive. I can rent 15 BD's for the price of buying one.
