Well, here goes...This is my first post! I'll start by listing what I have, and what I want. I'll then list the size of my Family Room, and the location of where my components will go. Finally, I'll finish with questions of how to create a kick...a... room!

Receiver: Denon AVR-3805 (have)
Speakers: Klipsch R-2650-C -or- R-5800-C in-ceiling (FL/FR & SL/SR) (want)
RC-7 Center (want)
(2) KSF-S5 Rears (have)
Velodyne DD-12
TV: Sony 61" (KP-61HS10) (have)
DVD Player (Denon 5900) (want)
Power cleaning: Monster Power HTPS 7000 (want)
wiring: Monster cable

Family Room dimensions: 25' X 15"
Media Niche dimensions: 8' X 4.5' X 2'

ok, Please comment on my choice of hardware for the creation of my home theater system. I have to go with ceiling mounted speakers because the Family Room is shared with the kitchen/nook (open floorplan). Also, because the best place for a subwoofer is up front, I need to elevate the 61" rear projection TV. I need to build a very sturdy cabinet for it (TV weighs 225lbs).

Questions:
Is this doable? (I might go to Home Depot, and have the cabinet made.

Has anyone heard of the Klipcsh in-ceiling speakers I mentioned?

Is it overkill, or a good idea to get the Monster Power unit?

Where should I place my four in-ceiling speakers? I was told to set the couch about four feet off the back wall so the rears (mounted @ 9' up) will have a better affect.

Am I doing ok? I feel so green at this...
Any advise, information, suggestion would be most appreciative!
Thanks in advance...

Some quick ideas

GCM,
Welcome to the world of Home Theater. To answer some questions:

1. The Cabinet. Lowe's or Home Depot are places to start. Depending on
budget, check out www.audioadvisor.com or www.boltz.com for
furniture designed specifically for audio/visual gear.

2. I have not heard the specific Klipsch speakers you mention, but the
company has a good reputation. Be aware that if the models you are
intending to buy are horn-loaded, the might have sonic attributes that
are different from the majority of direct-radiator speakers on the
market. This is not good or bad, just a design choice Klipsch makes.

3. The Monster Unit. I demoed the unit in my house for a week, and while
it looks cool, the price seems excessive for what is offered. I would
certainly consider some form of protection from weather or electrical
grid instability, but Panamax, Adcom, Brickwall, and even entry level
Monster products might deliver what you need.

Don't feel "green". Building a system is a process of learning and gradual experimentation. The Denon 5900 is a great player- I envy you.

Good luck, Michael

Thanks!

Micheal,

thanks for the information! I'll check with Home Depot & the urls you sent me. I may still choose the Monster Power HTPS 7000, since it will give me room to grow. Like you said, it's an ongoing process. At least it can grow with me!

I would not choose Klipsch. Not at all.

Paradigm
MB Quart
B&W ($$$)
Monitor Audio ($$)

These are the best I have heard with my own ears. There are many other favorites on this site that would be head & shoulders better than Klipsch!

Speakers

Thanks Zomba for replying!

I heard that SpeakerCraft makes great in-ceiling speakers, and that M&K have some rockin' subs. I'm waiting for M&K's MX-5100 to come out. Check out their sites:
www.speakercraft.com
http://www.mksound.com/
Also Atlantic Technologies. The exclusive THX Ultra II speaker company.

Later!
