Dual subwoofers placement?

I have read and been told that placing dual subs side by side would gain in output?..is that true?...i also read that one of the best way is placing them diagonnaly for example one on the front right and one on the back left?...i am ordering a second sub12 soon but i wanna be sure cause my really only option is to place them diagonnaly....is it better then side by side cause i dont have enought room to place them side by side in the front!...thx.
