Geez, you're running a little late with this review! End of the Innocence was one of the first DTS discs I ever saw, maybe one of the first discs ever released. :p While I really like most of the music, this one's a textbook example of a MC dud, IMOHO. I just simply hated it. It's an early example of instruments thrown randomly into every channel willy-nilly for no other reason than that they could be. There's no cohesiveness, no vision- just pointless and random rearranging that seemed to serve no creative purpose.

Thankfully MC has come a long ways since then. Sure, some discs are still mixed with the same haphazard abandon the Innocence was, but for a real taste of what MC can do, check out Beck's Sea Change, Steely Dan's Two Against Nature, Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, Flaming Lips Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots or Porcupine Tree's In Absentia.

Rob,

After reading your comments, I went back and listened to the parts of the album and I thought were done well (specifically tracks 1, 4, 5, and 10). While your comment There's no cohesiveness, no vision- just pointless and random rearranging that seemed to serve no creative purpose may be true for the other tracks (frankly, I have no desire to ever hear them again), I do not find it applicable (with the exceptions I noted in the review) for these tracks. I do appreciate your candor and I am always willing to revisit any reviewed material if someone disagrees.

I guess some will like it and some won't. While I'm a big fan of MC music, I definately dislike the (seemingly arbitrary) choice to have guitar solos behind me and horns moving around the room. To me the Henley disc honestly sounds like the surround mix was created by a computer program. Indeed- it may have been. There is such a program in wide professional use, or so I have read.

Still, I very much like the music. However, this is one of those rare cases where I replaced the CD with a MC disc, then ended up getting rid of the MC and going back to the CD.

I have both and i got rid of the cd as the 5.1 is so good. I enjoyed the whole disc. As with any review, its only one persons opinion. A thankless job at times.

Sorry to dredge up an old thread. I just picked up this disc the other day. It seems DVD-As are almost to the point of bargain bin prices.
I found the music quite good compared to the original 2 channel recording. While the 5.1 mixing is admittedly cheesy at times with the almost random choice of channels, I though it was fairly well done.
