Denon DVD-2200 Pure Direct modes confusion!?

Can someone please help me get this pure direct thing cleared up. My brand-spanking-new Denon DVD-2200 has 3 Pure Direct modes. As follows, from the manual:

Display - turns display on/off, in theory improves sounds quality
Video - turns video outputs on/off, again, supposed to improve sound quality
Digital - turns off audio output!!! .. huh??? what does that mean?

Does it turn off the digital audio outputs?? Does it turn off some DSP processing. Ugh, why can't they be a little more elaborate in the manual.

Right now I'm listening with everything off, and it sounds damn nice /w redbook! Better than my Bel Canto DAC 2 + Toshiba 3950 as transport. Killer SACD playback.. DSOTM.. oh man does it sound good.

thanks!
