Dead Optical Audio In on Pioneer Elite?

One of the 2 optical audio in connections on my Pioneer VSX-45Tx is not working. I've switched optical cables to show that it was not a cable problem. At the input that is not working, the auto signal select feature does not seem to recognize a digital connection for that input; it does for the other one. I've checked all of the system setup settings for digital inputs and they are correct. Is there some setting I've missed that might correct this or is it likely to be a dead connection? Could a problem in just one of these two connections be caused by a power surge?

Were they both working before? Are they assignable? If they are assignable, try assigning the second one to a different source that can use a digital input, or even to the same input the other one is assigned to now and see if the other one goes off and this one comes on.

Yes, they were both working the previous day. I did switch the input assignments and one is definitely not working.
