AGC - Auto Gain Control?

I'm watching old Star Trek episodes on Netfix. I have to significantly turn the volume up for this show compared to most other shows I watch. Then there's the loud and soft CDs. It would seem, being these are all digital sources, that the data could be processed and some median value signal be sent to the amp for a given volume (non compressed of course). Why isn't, this be done?

I would think that for a set volume a specific normalized signal could be generated/processed for at least a given input source. Thereby, eliminating me jumping back ten foot before scrambling to get the remove when changing from Star Trek to another show at the other end of the extreme:eek:
