All,
I'm looking for a receiver for ~$500. My budget is flexible. I can go +/- several hundred dollars, I'm just looking to get the best thing I can in approximately this price range. I do about 50/50 music and movies. I don't care about some of the newest features like 3d support, but it would be nice for future upgrades. Key features would be good/great 2 channel performance along with at least 4 HDMI inputs. So far I have been seriously considering the Yamaha RX-V667, but I'm sure there are other models out there that I should be looking at! Also, when do next year's models come out, should I be waiting for that?

Next years models just came out. If your in the US you can get about the best bang for the buck with factory refurbished Onkyos from last year. 707, 807.

I like Denon receivers myself. You should be able to find the 2311 in that price range. Another option is the Pioneer 1120 from Amazon which is going for about $425 shipped which is a nice deal.

I'd grab that Onkyo 707 Sholling linked. You can't get a better deal than that.
