HDTV Prices on the Rise

According to the Retrevo CE Index HDTV prices are on the rise in February. This is the first rise in prices since May 2008. Prices in February were up 10% after dropping approximately a total 35% from May 2008 to January 2009.

right after christmas my wife bought her tv. i liked it and went to order one. the price went up $50 and the next day went up another $10. i then went to get a vizio from walmart, the price $50 the next day. early january i saw the prices go up noticably.

Panasonic and Pioneer learned a hard lesson by cutting their profit margin in tough a economy.

I nabbed a BD player from Panny for what was an apparently an undercut price in November, so blame me for their several billion dollar loss last year.

I was hoping to get a Plasma or LCD next year. maybe not. We'll see.

I'm surprised. In this economy, I'd expect prices to come down. I guess ppl always have money for a big screen...

Got my PDP-5020FD form amazon.com for $1949 delivered now I have seen the price jump up another $500 probably accelerated because they don't make them anymore and are in short supply. There are a couple of stores that still have them for $2-2,500.

I think that the prices have went down since Christmas because of falling demand and manufacturers wanting to dump inventory due to the reccession. Now they are cutting back production which will cause prices to rise.

I actually predicted this back around Thanksgiving and talked my father into not waiting until spring to buy the TV he wanted.

My take on it, which may be wrong, is that they expect some people will "have" to buy a new TV to get what they want after the digital change over and will pay for it even if it is a bit higher than it was. Now it could be all about the economy and I was right for the wrong reasons, but I was still right.

Well crap I've been waiting for the prices to dropa bit more. Like many my job is not exceptionally secure but a 50' panny plasma is calling my name.

As long as new tech is still rolling out and manufactures still trying to get lcd up to a par, prices rise at the top and level at the bottom. Anyone remember the 20K XBR 60" plasma in 03? If your wanting bang for your buck mid-mid-low tvs seem to have hit their mark, but the higher end displays still command a premium

All I know is my Panasonic Th-50PZ77U went down by over half in just a year and a half. Great TV, should have waited a year though

I think you are right.

In my case, seeing deals in the newspaper gets me to expect low prices, and I refuse to pay more than the advertised sale prices. So, I would not buy anything with them raising the prices above those prices.

But, I am not the target audience anyway, as I bought an HDTV just over a year ago, and I am not planning on upgrading for several years. Perhaps in 2020 I will be a new one, even if my current one is still going strong. But I am unlikely to buy a new TV before then, unless my current one dies, and then I would likely not buy the same brand. A well made TV that is not abused should easily last that long.
