Go big or go home… I'm sure someone is going to sue me for stealing that. It seems that Mitsubishi has taken this motto to heart with its 73" WD-73735 rear projection DLP display. Big? Yeah. Affordable? Compared to flat panels - oh heck yeah. But how does it look? Very... not bad. You'll probably want to read on to see what I mean by that.
Tom, I have a 57732 which is two model years before this set. Most of what you said (especially the horrible SD performance) is spot on. The Mits colors can be made better with a colorimeter (and software) or (of course) a professional calibration as you mentioned in the article.

Most people say that realistically it's about 6000 hours of full brightness if you calibrate your set properly. I believe Mitsubishi says 10k or something silly like that. BTW, the bulbs themselves can be had on E-bay for like $150--no need to buy the full bulb and housing from Mits for $250-300.
I have the Diamond 65 and I love it. I'd agree with much of what you said. It did take some doing to get the picture dialed in, but once you do, it's pretty darn nice. For the money, it's really really really hard to beat.

I have last years model, the Wd-73733 and I find it hard to believe that they would not put either a toslink or spdif output on the back for when you get your HD over the air. I'm sure I don't have my colors dialed in perfectly, but I still find that the picture looks very good to me, and for what I paid for it, I definitely can't complain.

The back has three HDMI inputs, two more Component video inputs, a couple of analogue audio inputs, an S-Video/Composite input and a Coaxial digital audio input. There are no TOSLink or Coax audio outputs or PC inputs. Two antenna inputs are also included. If you have a set of 3D glasses and something to use them with (I didn't), there is a port for that as well. The power cord is not detachable (an odd oversight in a near top of the line RPDLP).
I wonder if Tom did an oops. My set has a coax audio OUTPUT strictly for OTA.
* Connector Type 1 x Composite video/audio input ( RCA phono x 3 ) - Rear, 1 x Digital audio output (coaxial) ( RCA phono ) - Rear, 1 x USB ( 4 pin USB Type A ) - Front, 1 x S-Video input ( 4 pin mini-DIN ) - Rear, 1 x Composite video input ( RCA phono ) - Rear, 3 x Audio input ( RCA phono x 2 ) - Rear, 2 x Component video input ( RCA phono x 3 ) - Rear, 1 x Composite video input ( RCA phono ) - Front, 1 x Component video input ( RCA phono x 3 ) - Front, 3 x HDMI input ( 19 pin HDMI Type A ) - Rear, 1 x Audio output ( RCA phono x 2 ) - Rear, 1 x Audio input ( RCA phono x 2 ) - Front
I thought rear projection was dead? I guess I have been proven wrong again.
I never could get used to off axis performance of a rear projection system like Tom suggested.
I am of the opinion that this is just another example of quantity over quality.
Would you really be willing to trade (permanently) your 42" display for this one Tom?
