There is nothing like the daunting task of buying a new camera. From the number of choices to the fanboy salesman at your local big box retailer it's hard to not only commit to buying that first camera, but also to figure out the type of camera you need. The photo enthusiast may remember with fondness shooting on film and waiting patiently for those photos to be developed. Today, the work of an entire darkroom or processing machine can be recreated, albeit not of the same quality, on your desktop. Today's photographer shooting in digital can nearly replicate the quality of film productions at a fraction of the cost.

I just bought a Canon XSI three weeks ago, it does have live view, and all I can say is wow!

The quality of the pictures is amazing, and I am already picking out the lenses I NEED to get. The kit lens is ok, but I like shooting with no flash so I need something more sensitive.

Any other audioholic photo buffs? I would welcome any tips to help me improve my pictures.

Uhm... I mean no disrespect, but that's just plain wrong.
If you have a 50mm prime on a Canon XTI which has a crop factor of 1.6 for example, you'll get an equivalent focal length of 80mm.
Sony has a crop factor of 1.5, the Four Thirds system has a crop factor of 2.0 and so on...

Nice article.

I took the plunge into the D-SLR pool a while back with a Rebel XTi and a couple lenses.

I have had a great time learning how to use it over the last while, including on my wedding / vacation in Jamaica this past winter.

Soon I will be in the market for a higher quality lens with a decent F stop and a wide focal range, say 50 to 250 mm, give or take... any suggestions?
