Default PC to HDTV pic resolution problem

I recently bought a Philips 17 inch LCD HDTV that I want to use as a PC monitor (Philips 17PF8946). When I hooked it up to my Dell Dimension 4600, the picture is in "stretch mode" not very good. I tried to put it in the native resolution of the TV at 1280 x 768 and it didn't help. My video card is a Nvidia geforce4 mx 440 and I don't know why the resolution is so bad. I'm thinking I need a new video card. The TV is connected DVI to VGA cable. Any other suggestions??

go to desktop, right click, go to properties, then go to settings, then advanced, then click the tab for your video card, see if you can make the adjustments you need there, and don't forget to set the refresh rate as high as you can, and keep the box checked that says hide modes that this monitor cannot display. I just setup my new 50" Samsung DLP for use as a dual monitor and had to use the DVI output with a DVI-VGA adapter and using the PC input on the tv. I was able to set the resolution of the tv to it's native resolution and it looks fantastic.
