Default questions about DLP and some issues im confused on

I mistakenly believed my toshiba 52hm84 was a 1080i tv.
turns out is a 720p tv.

I have a dish high def reciever and in the setup it wont work on 720p.
it flickers. its allways been set to 1080i and works good that way.

allso all over the manuel it says 1080i imputs on the component and HDMI will give the best picture quality but 420p and 720p are also good if thats what ya got.

why the hell is that?

I just assumed my less than good standard def picture was because the tv was 1080i and standard def just didnt work as well on it as id seen on 720p sets. my regular old CRT style tv is far supirio on standard def than my toshiba.

can someone please give me some insight here?
I would appreciate it greatly

thanks ahead

Mike
