picture quality on mitshbishi

I have a mitshbishi 300 projector. It seems that the picture on some movies ( not all) are washed out. it seems to happen on movies that have night sceens. The close-up shots seem to dissolve back and forth.

Is this a result of a poor dvd player (jvc under $100)or a setting that needs to be adjusted.

There is no ambient light in the room so the screen should be ok but I am open to suggestions.

What kind of connection are you using? Component? DVI?

Secondly, it could just be adjusting your settings in your projector.
