Default High Definition vs Enhanced Definition

The difference is resolution. Enhanced definition TV is essentially 480p, like DVD (although some have a slighly higher resolution). EDTVs can accept HD resolutions like 720p or 1080i but they scale it to their native resolution of near-480p. They are sometimes marketed as 'HD compatable'.

To be HDTV, the TV must use a resolution equal or greater to one of the ATSC defined HD resolutions; ie at least 720p.

On a 42" plasma from about a dozen feet - almost nothing to the human eye. Of course, processing takes a part of this... big time.

But, mostly, in a 42" plasma, unless you are close, you may not see any difference at all. Take a look at HD plasmas (1366x768) vs. ED plasmas (853x480) at your local BB/CC stores. Step really close, then step back to where you would actually be using it from.

Then decide if it is worth an extra $1,000+ for an HD plasma.

my opinion is go with the HD becuase HD TV looks better then SD TV even if HD TV is scaled down. Also if you plan on keeping it for a few years you will most likely own a HD DVD play (or blue ray) and I am sure those DVDs will look better then the current ones.
