Default Rear Projection King at Retail Stores?

[HDTVsalesbytype1]According to Current Analysis, a research firm, among large-screen (30 inches and larger) digital TV technologies, rear projection TV (RPTV) is still dominating U.S. retail channels, accounting for 57% of available product placements within the leading U.S. retailers, as of July 15, 2005. Plasma TVs accounted for a third of big-screen TV product placements, and LCD TV products made up only 14% of all televisions 30 inches and larger. While this doesn't necessarily surprise us, it's also apparent that no differentiation was given to CRT, DLP, or LCD rear projection technologies (or whether CRT was included at all). The apparent lack of an "Other" categories tells us that this comparison ignores that division and is focused solely on flat vs. non-flat screen formats. It's still an interesting read.

So, that means that flat panel displays account for 43% of the market? That's some good info. I would think that if we ignore CRT and include displays under 30" then suddenly LCD numbers might just go through the roof. How many sub 30" plasmas and RPTVs are there? Hmmmm...

I would think that as plasmas continue to fall in price we will continue to see them take up more and more floor space.

Bummer prior years aren't listed and shown as I would think the trend would show an increase in FPD floor space.

I would hardly call 57% of RPTV 'dominating' compared to 43% FPD.

There is a reason that rear projection is king because it is so cheap. I can walk into a store and buy a new 55" rear projection tv non HD for $1100CND and that is the advertized price.

The confusing part to me was the (apparent) inclusion (yet complete omission in the description) of DLP and LCD rear projection in with CRT rear projection as well as SD RPTVs... It's definitely a "bent" statistical chart. It needs quite a few more slices to be very helpful.

Also, when charts add up to 100% and have no "other" section then you know someone is "pushing" information at you for a specific purpose. (yes, I know I'm the one who posted the silly thing...)

That would be interesting... Throw out the CRT rear projection sets and just leave DLP, LCD, LCoS displays and compare them to FPDs. Basically new slim format RPTs vs. FPDs ... If CRT was part of that study, then I would be when eliminated plasma & lcd would sit on top.

What does it matter to consumers is my question...

Hey now, I've a a 47" CRT RP HDTV, so CRT is still valid in this comparison.
