Default How to purchase AVR

I'm planning on purchasing the Pioneer VSX-21TXH, but the only store that I see it available in near me is Best Buy (and it's way overpriced). Anyways, what sites are safe to buy from on the internet? I'm seeing sites like dbuys, ecom electronics, mydigitaluniverse, that are advertising free shipping and a reasonable price, so is there a downside to purchasing that way?

Thanks

I would highly suggest picking from an authorized online retailer. Here's the link for Pioneer's authorized online home av dealers.

If you prefer to try your luck with an unauthorized dealer then at the very least please use resellerratings.com and check out the ratings of whatever stores you're interested in.

Best of luck, the Pioneer elite receivers are excellent!

Oh cool I didn't even think about pioneer's authorized dealer list. I will definitely look into that and not one of those unknown internet sellers. I want to make everything is legit...

Realized I forgot to mention why it's important...if you purchase from an unauthorized dealer you will not have any warranty support...with a big purchase like an AVR I would highly suggest going the authorized route.

Online is usually very safe. Just make sure you go with retailers that are trustworthy. If you have a question ask.

If you go the online route, call them before ordering and ask them how much they'll sell it to you for. 99 times out of 100, they'll reduce the cost for you.

My officemate just bought a VSX-21 from Your Deal via Amazon. $469 delivered (no longer in stock). Even though the merchant has great feedback, I gave him a hard time that it wasn't going to be the right thing. He got it on Tuesday, and it's the real deal.

I paid about $910 to get a VSX-23 from Best Buy because (a) they had them and (b) they are authorized. If I had to do it over again, knowing that my buddy got a VSX-21 delivered in great shape from Your Deal (with the buying protection that Amazon offers), I would have ordered the VSX-23 from the same merchant. They were under $600 last week, and are currently $649.

I actually just found this from another thread:

If you made your purchase in a Best Buy store, and you find an Internet retailer with a local retail store honoring its own online prices, we'll match their price, plus 10% of the difference. Internet-only retailers are exempt from our price matching program, as well as Web-exclusive offers. Eligible items must be the same brand and model, and currently in stock at the competitor's store. For purchases made online at BestBuy.com, please refer to the Online Price Guarantee on BestBuy.com.

I guess that's Best Buy's guarantee to price matching for stores advertising online. What I'm thinking of trying is that since 6th Ave Electronics has actual stores, maybe trying to give them a call to see how much the VSX-21 is in store, and if the price is right, try to get Best Buy to price match it for me. We'll see what happens...

Unless you have 6th Avenue stores locally, don't be surprised if they refuse to do it. After all, their policy is to beat the price of local stores. However, I didn't have any problem with Best Buy matching an online price for my Pioneer 1015 four years ago, and it wasn't from a local store. This past summer, though, they refused to match the price from Amazon on a TV.

I've read that it's more effective to ask for a price match over the phone (because the store knows that you're more likely to go somewhere else if you just need to hang up versus walk out of the store). I got the price match on the receiver over the phone, and was rejected on the TV in person. Doesn't mean that there weren't other reasons, but I'd say give them a call first and see what they say.
