Is re-foaming speakers an easy project?

I have (2) old pair of speakers I am using, until I find what I want for an upgrade.

I have a pair JBL LX 55, and a pair of Infinity (don't remember model)

Both pair have one speaker that has rotting foam around the woofers.

Since I'm listening to these now, I'd like to re-foam them, if it isn't a difficult process. I don't want to send them out to a professional, because, frankly, they just aren't worth it. If re-foaming works, I may place them in my garage, when I buy something new.

My questions are: How difficult is this?

Is this a project a simpleton, such as myself can handle? If I change the vacume bag, and get it right, I give myself a golf clap...

I'm not crafty, either. A hot glue gun in my hand can be a fatal mistake. J/K

If I'm not skilled enough for a re-foaming project, can I fix the rattle in these speakers with cloth tape? Just until I buy new? I know how silly this must sound, but that's what I almost did yesterday. I had the cloth medical tape in my hand, but I reconsidered, thinking this might just make them sound even worse.

And thanks in advance.

It is actually fairly easy. Look through my old threads, I have explained the procedure many times.

I see it must be some time ago, and the posts seem to be off the cliff.

You need.

A supply of razor blades.

Acetone.

Loudspeaker glue.

A new surround of the correct size.

The correct voice coil shims

A new dust cap.

Using acetone and a sharp blade, remove all foam and glue residue form the loudspeaker chassis and cone.

Cut out the dust cap with a razor blade, keeping the sharp edge away from the voice coil.

Place the shims between the voice coil and the magnet pole piece, to recenter the voice coil.

Glue the new surround first to the cone and then to the chassis with loudspeaker glue.

When the glue is dried and cured, glue in the new dust cap, with the loudspeaker glue.

When the glue is cured, replace the speaker back in the enclosure, and enjoy music again.

OK, thanks, I did. I was spelling it wrong, for a hit (re-foaming)

Are those "kits" any good?

Don't they send you everything needed, for about $10-20 per speaker?

And thanks.

From Orange County or Simply Speakers.

The kits should contain most of what you need. I suspect you will have to provide the razor blades and acetone. Check that it has what you need before you buy. And yes the kits are fine.
