Nope, same quality, just the conveinence of only running 1 set of wires to TV, and no need to switch inputs. It doesn't actually up convert the quality of the signal at all.

I had to make the same choice, I went with the Yamaha. Not that I didn't like the Denon, but my prev receiver was a Denon, and I wanted to try the Yamaha. Also, the Yamaha was about $400 cheaper where I live, and with basically the same performance, I went with the Yammie.

Sounds like a bad volume control. It often occurs when they get contaminated with dust. Usually the noise is worsened when the volume is adjusted. If it just pops out of the blue when no adjustments are made, I'd take it in, or send it back.
