Baffle Step Compensation and AVR Software

Well, knowledge is power. I'm looking at a WAF situation here. I'm also looking at the reality that I may not be able to audition speakers in our house. I'm also looking at the reality of an in-store audition probably won't translate well to how they'll sound at home. So, the easy answer...

Baffle Step Compensation and AVR Software

So, take a look at this cabinet, for instance: http://www.amazon.com/Parker-Furniture-Huntington-Entertainment-Bookcase/dp/B00GS87DWQ/ref=sr_1_73?s=furniture&ie=UTF8&qid=1417494649&sr=1-73&keywords=entertainment+center Let's say that the left and right speakers will be placed at ear level...

Baffle Step Compensation and AVR Software

Here's one of many that I've seen: http://www.bowers-wilkins.com/Speakers/Home_Audio/600_Series/686.html They talk about it sounding good on a wall, bookshelf, or anywhere. They show a picture of it on a stand. I'm guessing it was designed to be wall mounted, and that the baffle effect would...

Baffle Step Compensation and AVR Software

I used this as my reference to understand BSC: http://www.salksound.com/wp/?p=42 Sometimes, I run across speakers that the manufacturer claims can be wall mounted or placed on a stand. According to this reference, they'll sound different in each location. That's fine if you have the...

Why are people still buying CD players?

Does anyone know of a summary of which types of downloadable music is lossless and which type aren't?

Why are people still buying CD players?

When I saw this title in the audiophyte section, I thought it was going to lead to a discussion about sound quality of music downloaded from the internet. Is all music downloaded as lower quality MP3 files?

    Active 5.1 System?

This is what initially got my interest. It's from another thread in the loudspeaker section. I did not want to hijack that thread.

    Active 5.1 System?

Yes. Before I even asked about active ceiling speaker, I guessed that the amplification for those speakers would be remote. I know that eliminates some of the advantages, but the amplifiers would still be specifically designed for the drivers and crossovers.

    Active 5.1 System?

I've seen active subs and active speakers. But is it possible to put together an active 5.1 speaker system? If so, do you just need a 5.1 pre amp? Is anyone building active ceiling speakers?

Understanding Measurements (Off Axis Question) Comparing Speakers

Are there examples of speakers that people really like, but measure poorly off axis?

How Do You Buy High-End Speakers?

Hey Herbu! I'm at the opposite end of the budget spectrum. But my take-away from this thread is that there will be a good probability of speakers not sounding the way they were designed to sound because of your particular room acoustics. I'm in a position where I will not be able to do any...

Understanding Measurements (Off Axis Question) Comparing Speakers

When a subjective, non measured speaker review says that a speaker 'benefitted from being toed-in, and pointed toward the listener', is that an indication that it wouldn't measure well off axis?

Understanding Measurements (Off Axis Question) Comparing Speakers

OK. I'm concerned about having a really bright, reflective room. I've been doing tons of reading. Some solutions include headphones (eliminates reflections), room treatments (low WAF), and having speakers very close to the seating position. These three options all increase the percentage of...

Speaker Performance in an Anechoic Chamber

What do speakers sound like in an anechoic chamber or a big open field, where reflected sound is almost completely eliminated? Do they sound insanely good, or weird?

    NAD Power Envelope

I have a 30ish year old NAD receiver that has a PE (power envelope) designation at the end of the model#. My understanding is that the amplifier design was based on having short term reserve power that would make it perform like an amp with a much higher continuous power rating. It could...

    Black Market Speakers

OK. Thanks everyone. What do y'all think about contacting the manufacturer, and giving them the serial numbers of used speakers that I would consider purchasing?

    Black Market Speakers

So, let me get this straight. Gray market speakers are speakers that are the exact same quality, but carry no warranty. Somebody got them from where they were built and bypassed the distributor. If there is a warranty issue, I'd be screwed. What we're calling black market are true fakes...

    Black Market Speakers

So, if there is something on eBay that says KEF, or Martin Logan, or B&W, one can be almost certain that it is genuine? I actually found a warning about, of all brands, Sonus Faber.
