Can you hear 20 Hz when you reach 50 or 60+?

I'm in my mid 40's. I hear 20 Hz with headphones. I can hear down to 13 Hz with them. Some may insist that it's harmonic distortion that I hear, but what I hear sounds an octave below 26 Hz. It's quiet -- a vague pressure on my ear canals, but the pressure is consistent. At 12 Hz there's no...

Building a new 5.1 system.... but Sub?

Am I misremembering the listening window response of the Affordable Accuracy center? Anyway, I agree that an excellent 2ch is preferable to a mediocre 5.1ch. But I don't know that it's a good idea to recommend the sort of kludge that excludes the convenience of using an AVR for source...

Building a new 5.1 system.... but Sub?

Oooh, look what I found. If you don't mind used, you should jump on this for LCR: https://www.usaudiomart.com/details/649680750-philharmonic-audio-affordable-accuracy-monitors-center-channel/ That'll free up a ton of money for monster subwoofage -- Dual Hsu VTF-2 MK5, for example.

Building a new 5.1 system.... but Sub?

That would be a solid set. And yes, ascendacoustics.com is ok to order speakers from directly. Hover over Purchase --> System Advisor to build your cart. Also, their least expensive sub, the Rythmik LV12F, would sufficiently shake things off the walls in your 20x12 room I think. They also...

Building a new 5.1 system.... but Sub?

Wow, I've been gone for a while. It seems in my absence all the good boutique bookshelf speakers have gone off the market. No more Affordable Accuracy monitors, no more Wavecrest HVL-1, no more of the Monoprice ribbon tweet set... Is Ascend Acoustics now the lowest common denominator for rock...

Attic find "Fane" 18" bass driver- would like to make hifi sub

That looks like a pro audio driver, hinting that it's going to have a high resonant frequency and a sharp rolloff below 40 Hz. You wouldn't be able to design a proper box for it without knowing its Thiele-Small parameters, which you'd most likely only get by measuring with special equipment. I...

    Compressing my PCs audio

You could install Equalizer APO, boost your pre-amp gain to an outrageous level, then turn your master volume way down. That would result in clipping loud peaks, and effectively volume limiting. It'd sound like feces for music though.

    Earphone advice for apple switcher

So are you looking for earbuds that don't use foam or silicone ear tips? Gotta say, I'm not sure where you'd find any. The only non-apple ones I can think of off the top of my head are Bluetooth: Soundpeats Trueair. Seems like I might've seen some behind-the-neck jogging earphones that might...

been looking everywhere for accurate information please help verify

The PC -> DP-to-HDMI adapter -> TV solution will probably only net you stereo sound. Stick with the PC -> HDMI -> AVR path.

Jokes... Heard any good ones lately?

Went to the doctor the other day. He said, "Hello Mr. Johnson. What brings you here today?" I said, "My car. Hahaha!" Then he writes in his chart, "Not... sexually... active." A little while into the examination he told me I should stop masturbating. I said, "Why?" He said, "Because I'm...

Best setup for ~3TB of wav files on hard drive

I couldn't say, as I haven't tried JRiver or MediaMonkey. I don't know enough to compare and contrast them. You could install all 3 and see what you like best, though. JRiver offers a 30 day trial, and MediaMonkey is freemium -- meaning a basic version with missing functionality is available...

Best setup for ~3TB of wav files on hard drive

I found a free music manager app called MusicBee that seems pretty clever. I was looking for a free alternative to JRiver and MediaMonkey Gold (both $50). MusicBee will auto fetch album art and artist bio (I guess from Wikipedia?),and indexes all your songs in a database for instant search...

Best setup for ~3TB of wav files on hard drive

Compress them to FLAC, add metadata with MusicBrainz Picard, then serve them over DLNA with MinimServer (more info). You can also serve your music with Plex Server simultaneously if you wish. The two should play well together without interfering with each other. Re: media player, I wish I...

    Let's talk modems & routers

Self-heal! LOL! I never knew that was a thing until a dug an old D-Link or Belkin or Trendnet or similar crap wireless N router out while dumpster diving at my local waste management facility about a year or so ago. The first time I dug around in its web interface and found the self-heal...

    Let's talk modems & routers

Well, there's the obvious issue of when one component goes bad the thing is more expensive to replace than replacing the individual component. Remember when your parents / neighbors / whatever used to ask you whether they should get that TV with integrated VCR? But beyond that, it's mostly the...

    Let's talk modems & routers

Huh. That's not always been the case I don't think. https://www.bayareatechpros.com/ac1900-to-ac68u/ Wonder whether current versions of Merlin would brick a TM-AC1900? I'm highly tempted to try it and see.

Huh. Wonder why? I've never tried it personally. I flash every tm-ac1900 that comes through my house with Advanced Tomato. I do have to downgrade the bootloader in the process though.

    Let's talk modems & routers

Hey @Swerd, I recommend against that TP-Link router. Most consumer-grade routers ship with bug-filled firmware, and I expect that TP-Link is no exception. See this post for a rant on the matter if you're bored. BSA's recommendation of Google routers was a good one. I'm also fond of Asus...
