Head-fi is awesome. Sure...there can be a lot of crap over there but there's a lot of good stuff too. There's some excellent reviews and threads about different components some that are like literally hundreds of pages of discussion. Easily the best and busiest headphone website on the internet.

Congrats. I'm kinda looking for a new set of headphones myself. I have two pairs for sale, one that actually may have worked well for you but I only decided to try to sell them today. The others not so much since they are open. Not sure what I'm looking for...still going through all the options.

Looking forward to this. I was thinking about building something myself but not nearly as complex as this project. I was thinking more of a 1.5cf sealed cube with a 10" woofer...lol

Are you opposed to IEM's? If not...there's a lot of options. Of of my personal favs are the Etymotic ER4's which I'm listening too right now actually. Sound is phenomenal, comfort is great...sometimes I forget they are in my ears, headstage is amazing, and they work well straight off an MP3...

Don't forget that on top of the cost of the headphones you'll need an amp. But of course one would assume that someone looking at a $700 headphone probably already has amping options. As far as price...$700 is a lot of money for headphones. They'd have to be spectacular before I'd look twice...

Cable and source work fine. It's the DAC and RCA from my headphone setup. I will see if there's any sort of a repair shop in the area and contact them just to see.

The 701's are probably the most comfy headphone I've had but they sound dead. Very boring. I owned mine for about a month. They were well broken in. They just didn't have anything to offer. Sold them off and never looked back.
