1080p and the Acuity of Human Vision

Mine falls right into the "benefit of 1080p starts to become noticable". Which sounds about right, because I have noticed differences between 720p and 1080p video (of the same source). While I can't necessarily make out more "detail" on the 1080p picture, it just looks overall sharper. When...

    Hd Vs Blu Ray

For the record, Blu-ray IS doing porn, so it's a non-issue.

Why use the receiver to switch video inputs instead of the TV?

I think it depends on the setup. My TV has far more inputs than my receiver, so I use it for all of my video, while most of my audio is routed straight to the receiver.

Quietest Detail in a DVD scene

Pretty much anything with the wind blowing through the trees. Shows good attention to detail in the sound mix. Especially if they actually mix it equally through all of the surround channels, something I've noticed is generally quite rare for some reason. For example, in most movies, when...

    Question about DVI

Unless you can find something with both. My TV has only one HDMI port, but it also has two DVI ports. Which essentially means I can connect three HDMI devices to my TV. FTW.

    Monoprice.com cables

How much of a difference will that make? On, say, a six-foot cable, like the two I just ordered yesterday in 28AWG. They were quite a bit cheaper... Most of what I ordered yesterday is for my upcoming PS3 (HDMI, HDMI>DVI, two optical cables, and an optical switcher, all for less than forty...

Looking for a good Blue Ray player.

Because no one's going to buy them. I don't see people lining up outside Best Buy to get their hands on the latest Bikini Destinations. Do you? I wanted the list to be MOVIES. Things that are not considered to be "motion pictures" were not counted. And I didn't remove all "non-Hollywood"...

Looking for a good Blue Ray player.

Well, I did the math, based on listings at HighDefDigest.com (which seems to have the most up-to-date listings, including stuff that was announced at CES), and here's what I came up with: (note: the following numbers include films that are already available, those with set release dates in...

Can I change native 2.35:1 format pictures to fit my 1.78:1 screen?

You're right. But it's the only option you have. So which is worse? A fuzzy picture or those horrible black bars? If you're that picky about it, just do your research and buy only films in 16:9. That'll solve your problem, too.

Looking for a good Blue Ray player.

Excellent comparison. :) In fact, if I can work up the motivation this afternoon, I might even put forth a compilation of exact numbers, based on films that have already been released and those that have been confirmed and/or announced on both formats. HighDefDigest, here I come.. hehe.

Can I change native 2.35:1 format pictures to fit my 1.78:1 screen?

I think some people are getting a bit miffed over a tiny little thing. What "large" black bars? What "significant" wasted space? When I finally upgraded to widescreen, I was actually surprised at how small the bars were on 2.35:1 films. I was expecting them to be quite a bit larger. When...

Looking for a good Blue Ray player.

Bad luck, that. :( I've only ever had one piece of Sony equipment die on me (an old stereo system), and it was well beyond it's time when it did it. Never had a problem with Playstations.. I replaced my Sony stereo with a Sony 5.1 receiver. When my Panasonic DVD player died, I replaced it...

Looking for a good Blue Ray player.

You mean like reel-to-reel tape? Compact discs? 3.5" floppies? Things like that? Betamax? Long story, that one. Lack of hardware support, lack of content, and smaller storage capacity. That's what killed Betamax. And which of the two HD formats has those same problems? Gee, it's...

Looking for a good Blue Ray player.

I thought the PS3 supported SACD? Or it was supposed to, at any rate.. not sure if they removed the feature before the end. I was hoping not to choose sides, but it's starting to look like Blu-ray for me. The LG player was my last desperate hope, but my funds won't allow it. But I'm getting...

Experiencing "temporary" burn in on my LCD--help please!

Wait a tic.. a different TV did the same thing? You've got something else going on, then... Especially if you're not noticing it on the in-store displays. A lag issue, or image retention, or whatever it's doing, wouldn't care what the source was.. it would do it with everything.

Experiencing "temporary" burn in on my LCD--help please!

Yeah, taking it back is probably the best idea. My Westinghouse does something similar occasionally (i.e. twice since I bought it a month ago), where it will get odd "blobs" of slightly lighter color in part of the screen. But it's only noticable when the screen is near-black. Once the...

    Time Warner Total HD Disc

That's actually a complex discussion. The problem is that no bit of film is ever shot with perfect focus and super-sharp resolution. There comes a point where a higher resolution offers no real benefit.. it's larger, but the softness of the original film frame means there's no more actual...

    Time Warner Total HD Disc

Kind of a tricky question, really. From a technical standpoint, I hope Blu-ray wins. I just think it's the better disc. However, I don't plan on supporting either of them.. WB can go to hell, I'm getting a dual-format player.

    Transformers trailer

Sheep... you've been had. Those "screenshots" of yours are, in fact, fan-made, from several years ago, before this movie had even been announced. The transformers in the film look nothing like what you posted, nothing like any Transformer has ever looked before.

Do I really need HDMI ?

Not necessarily. My TV accepts 1080p through component, VGA, and DVI in addition to HDMI. It seems to be a common misconception that component can't carry a 1080p signal. It's far more common that a piece of equipment simply doesn't support the feature... doesn't mean it isn't possible. In...
