I don't think that ML speakers are overpriced at all. In fact, you'd probably have to pay considerably more for a dynamic speaker that even came close to the ML's transparency and detail. Of course, many dynamic speakers can play louder, provide more "slam," and perhaps provide a wider listening...

Oh sure, huge bumps and/or dips should raise red flags, but certain aspects such as the ability to resolve inner detail, stage depth, imaging, etc. depends on far more elements than the mere frequency response would suggest. "Audiophool"--I love that term...assuming it wasn't directed at me! :D

You can't begin to gauge what a headphone or speakers will actually sound like based on a frequency response graph!

Are you currently using a Sunfire with your ML speakers? Are Sunfire amps able to handle the 1 ohm load that ML's present at high frequencies?

I've owned ESS, AR, Magnepan, Acoustat, Quad, B&W, and Martin Logan: for me, the best sounding is Martin Logan. I recently bought a pair of ML Theos and love them. It's hard to achieve the clarity and transparency of an electrostat in a box speaker!
