Help from someone with Bass Box Pro or ?

You are free to believe what you want in that regard. In the end it is your decision and you are the only one that knows your goals and intentions the best. It sounds like your friends with the coffee shops could be a good resource and I think you will do just fine. TLS Guy is also a...

Help from someone with Bass Box Pro or ?

"but I can't see why a manufacturer of drivers wouldn't have better software than people like us." They do have better equipment, but there are two reasons that you get variation. 1. Marketing. Just because they have better equipment does not mean that they will publish the results...

Help from someone with Bass Box Pro or ?

I have BassBox Pro and LEAP5. I don't think much of BassBox Pro and X-Over Pro as a useful software package and you probably can't afford LEAP5. For that kind of money I would consider SoundEasy v17. It is a complete suite (including testing for loudspeakers and drivers) and it does...

    Mass Loaded Vinyl

Both approaches of stiffening and dampening do different things. Rigidity does raise the resonance points of the panels and make the reduction of vibration easier to control. The Dynamat (or its equivalent) works by absorption. Actually, it converts mechanical energy into heat. Bracing...

Speaker Repair- how to glue / attach coil like piece that is loose / hanging

I would use silicon sealant or silicon glue. Try to get something with a little viscosity to it so that it is not too runny.

Spend less on speakers, more on acoustic treatment?

Frankly, there is a balance for every room that includes, in part, room size, reflectivity, absorption, shape, and placement as attributes to producing a good environment. Loudspeakers do not exist in a vacuum either. There are different types of loudspeakers and they all have their benefits...

Spend less on speakers, more on acoustic treatment?

Come on! And you live in Florida, too! Land of ceramic tile! :D My room is so live that you can hear it breathing. :) Anyway, just had to say that.

Some New Evidence that Generation Y May Prefer Accurate Sound Reproduction

I agree with the analysis... However, the proof is in what they buy. They may agree that lossless quality is better, but if their actual buying preference says otherwise, then as a manufacture I would follow where the market goes (or the profit). For a meaningful study (from a market...

Actually, I have seen half-space defined as a plane that the loudspeaker sits on and I have seen it defined as a plane that the loudspeaker sits into, flush with the baffle. Obviously, you get two different results. So, the confusion is one of vocabulary and how/who defines it. The link...

The supporting evidence for the flat alignments is in Vance Dickason's 7th Edition Loudspeaker Design Cookbook, section 2.50. As far as measuring space goes, my point was supposed to be measuring in infinite baffle arrangement, not half-space. I misspoke. The rational is that I wanted to...

Hi, If your budget is $1200, then I would highly recommend looking at some kit speakers. It saves you a lot of trial and error getting things right. Earl Geddes has some excellent products that might fit the budget in kit form. The Harper 8 would stretch the budget a little, but would be...

For vented: Super Forth-Order Boom Box Forth-Order Sub-Chebyshev Quasi Third-Order At least these are the old names. Box loss will impact alignment as well. I know infinite baffle (2∏), full-space (4∏), half-space (ground plane), quarter-space, and eighth-space. What is...

Thanks for the correction on the rolloff. It is typically about 18 to 20 dB for flat alignments. Yes and no, that is actually in half-space, but a sealed cabinet does the same thing, so what is your point? Lastly, if your opinion of a vented enclosure is that it is not HiFi, then that is...

Buy a copy of Vance Dickenson's Loudspeaker Design Cookbook. That is the best way to get started. That book has a mountain of useful information.

Yes, the rolloff is about 12 dB/octave. However, they remain flat (if properly designed) much lower than a sealed cabinet and this is one of the reasons they are popular. Which design you use is usually determined by the driver's Qts.
