I'd put the statement center way above the KEF's. I'm sure the KEF's are well worth their retail/big box store price of $650ish. If you were looking in a retail store for a center channel with the drivers & crossover of the statements I think you'd need to spend $2000-2500. Maybe more...

What's sub and crossover frequency are you using? Neither of these speakers are bass hogs. The difference between the R50's and Monitor 50's is minimal.

A user on the AVS forums had a mini budget bookshelf GTG recently and that same Yamaha NS-6490 either won or was one of the top couple performers. Odd design but obviously a good performer at the pricepoint.

Those Polks are a fine speaker for roughly $150 a pair.

The main problem with itunes is that 99% of the people of have it and use it have their music at 128 kbps. Beyond that it's fine IMO.

The great thing about DIY is if you feel that cabinet resonance is very-very high on your priority list you can certainly design that into your build project. Otherwise if you are like 99.99% of the population you can go with a more conventional cabinet design :D
