My room acoustics need Major Help. What's the quickest solution?

In a room your size you are having upper frequency problems without treatment, but what is even more damaging is the low end. The products you listed will not tame them. To get up to speed on how low end reacts in a room and how to treat it, see the following. Bass Traps and Understanding Low...

    EQ adjustments help

+1 to the above. You will have nulls and peaks throughout the responds due to the room itself. If you try to EQ a upper frequency like that, you would only need to move your head 1 inch for everything to change. Basically a room frequency response will change as you move your head. Better to...

    Correct panel placement

Behind the speaker is fine. You are trying to control boundary reflections off the front wall. For the early reflection points those would be on the left, right wall and the ceiling. See the following on how to find those spots. Video Early or First Reflection Points - GIK Acoustics Great to...

    Correct panel placement

I can answer that here. Around a year ago we did a total redesign of the 244 and Monster Traps and we now have a patent pending on the design. Basically we are able to make it lighter/a bit thinner and it actually performs better. It is called Flexrange. I hope you notice that it looks a lot...

    Acoustic Cabin, DIY

Things like foam is not going to stop all that much if any sound. It takes thick mass (think concrete) to do this.

No choice - lounge against rear wall! What to do?

I agree with the others about panels behind where you sit. Make sure though they are THICK! There is a lot of low end coming off that back wall. Also don't discount treating other areas of the room. Bass traps in as many corners as possible and panels for the early reflection points. The Basics...

    Height of wall mounted bookshelves

Agreed.. Make sure the tweeter is at ear height. Generally I do not like to tilt the speakers.

    Room treatments/alterations?

Having a open area can actually be a good and bad thing. It is good as it is not letting any early reflection hit you, but bad if the other side has a reflection which will mess up imaging. The cure is to put absorption (that word you did not what to hear :D:D) on the wall with the reflection...

    Room treatments/alterations?

There is no easy fix to your problem and to be honest you would need to build a new ceiling that would make it pretty low. As far as treatment there really is not much you can do if the wife is not going to let you put up some treatment. Is there a reason she is against panels on wall? If so...

Kiwi, Glad I could be of help. For ceiling itself any kind of hanging plant hook will work, but see if you can find these at your local hardware store. http://www.ooks.com/p-394-white-versahook.aspx

    Room 11x14?

If it gives you any comfort we have treated 1000s of rooms that size with great results. The key is to bass trap the heck out of it and focus thick panels in areas that help control strong low end nulls and peaks coming off the walls. Generally that is the back wall.

Dome shaped room for home theater?

I could not imagine trying to treat a dome shape. Did you pretty much just make it dead or rebuild the walls and ceiling? Glenn Kuras

How does one deal with an oddly shaped room?

Normal heavy drapes if covering all the walls will absorb only the high end so the room will seem "dead" but muddy/boomy. If you want to use drapes for looks then look into maybe using something that is acoustically transparent like Guilford of Maine. You can find it on our website, but you...

How does one deal with an oddly shaped room?

If your sitting on the couch it would be the side wall to right. They would go in the early reflection point. See the following to understand early reflection points. http://www.gikacoustics.com/news_020209.html I would also put panels on the front wall behind each speaker and one panel...
