Another vote for the LPA-1. I'm using it with a Yamaha RX-V659. Built solid.

First time buying a HT - frustrated
A starting point for the set up. 1000 for the speakers,500 for the reciever,250 for the dvd player and 250 for cables and accesories. Imho.

First time buying a HT - frustrated
First decide on your price range and then let your ears decide. Honest. I'm building a system from some quality advice but it takes time. Let us know what your price range is and what you like.

My Modest HT...........
Nice sub but I didn't recognize it in silver. Picked up an Outlaw LFM-1 last month myself. Is that carpet on the floor or is it painted?

I Need Your Help! What's my setup?
Yes with what MDS said. With a speaker controller with enough zones you will be able to control the volume in each area.

Old Sub, New System
If I understand this right, you need a sub output from your reciever to an amp. Then the amp output to your passive sub.
