I'm an ***, but my neighbour is a bigger ***.

    One word: headphones.

What would you get for 10 grand?

...and skills. The tools aren't much use without the skills to use them effectively!

What would you get for 10 grand?

Thank you, those are some nice suggestions. Please keep in mind that my budget must include a CD player and an amp (unless I get powered speakers.)

What would you get for 10 grand?

Yes, because it will be used exclusively for stereo CDs. (I have a separate HT system that I am quite satisfied with. I am much less picky about HT sound because video dominates the movie-watching experience for me.)

What would you get for 10 grand?

I have a strong possibilty for a new job that pays a lot better than my current job. If it happens, one of the things I want is a much nicer stereo than I have ever had before. I am trying to put aside all prior biases and take a totally "start from scratch" approach. 10K will be my upper limit...

    it's too *^%$#@! HOT for may !

Weird. Here in Oklahoma, it is just the opposite. It is at least 10-15 degrees cooler than usual for this time of year.

    Hyperdrive Engine

I understand the analogy you are attempting, but it is wrong. Nobody believed, 70 years ago, that the technological challenges of a trip to the moon could be met. It was known, however, that it was possible in theory. FTL travel is theoretically impossible, not merely impossible in practice...

    Hyperdrive Engine

FTL travel through "normal" space is definitely impossible, and cannot be achieved by any technology. This is made very clear by relativity. That leaves "warping" of space (such as what occurs in a wormhole) or travel through some (as yet strictly theoretical) "other dimension" as the only...

    Hyperdrive Engine

There are three major problems with trying to use wormholes for space travel. The first is that, while we don't know where the nearest wormhole is yet, we do know that it is outside the solar system and would therefore take years to reach. The second is that we don't know what is on the other...

    Hyperdrive Engine

Why do people keep misinterpreting my comments as expressing unwillingness to explore? That is missing the point entirely! My point is that we cannot think of travel through a "parallel space" as a viable option without first establishing that such a space exists and a way to get there/back...

The current crop of muscle cars

If I lived someplace without a speed limit (Germany, say), I might want a muscle car. Here in the US, I just don't see the point. My little Hyundai has no problem getting to 80 (5 mph over the fastest speed limit on the turnpike), and gets 35 mpg!

    Aaaaarrrrrrggggghhhhh!!!!!!

Maricopa county had the right idea! We should make that a national law! It is also time to change the law regarding medical care so that proof of being in the US legally is required for treatment. I, for one, am damned sick of illegals getting free services that the rest of us have to pay...

    Newton was wrong?.... or?

True. I still find the idea of some sort of gravitational phenomenon that only holds at galactic scales much easier to accept than "dark matter". If the alledged dark matter were a very small percentages of the known mass of galaxies (say 0.1%), that might seem reasonable, but 90%?!

    Hyperdrive Engine

I would try riding a unicorn if somebody told me where to find one. We can't try travelling through a "parallel space" until we know how to access it, and so far there have been no testable ideas about how such a thing might be attempted (or even to show that it is there to be accessed at all.)...

    Newton was wrong?.... or?

So far, there is no grand unified theory that successfully combines general relativity with quantum mechanics. My guess is that, when such a theory is found, it will explain galactic motion without the need for dark matter while reducing to Newton's laws at smaller scales.

    Aaaaarrrrrrggggghhhhh!!!!!!

Why do we allow illegals to use our hospitals, schools, and other public services at all? I see no reason not to require proof of citizenship (or at least a passport, in the case of a medical emergency.)

    Hyperdrive Engine

The concept of a "parallel space" is purely theoretical at this point. We have thus far not even proven that such a space exists, much less found a way to travel through it.

    Major electronics problem!

It turns out that they are still under warranty. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it), the problem has not occurred again since I left it unplugged for a day. That makes it impossible to test which component is the culprit. Also, if I send either one in while it is...

    Major electronics problem!

I use a Cambridge Audio 340C CD player and 340A integrated amp. They are about two years old (as far as I know, the warranty has expired), and have never been abused in any way. Last night, when I first turned them on, I got no sound for several minutes (through headphones), then it suddenly...
