What's the best $500 AV Receiver for 2014?

Hard choice between the five mentioned honestly. Of course, anyone who's been around me long enough will say that I voted for the Yamaha. Wrong. I had to go with the Sony. I think that people in the market today, wanting a $500 receiver, have certain expectations about integrated features and...

    Yamaha Aventage RX-A2010

I don't think I've put this on here yet, so if I have... mods, you know what to do. With that out of the way, this is my new(er) solution to older, hotter running equipment. Also, it has two remotes! :D Looks good enough. I still wish they had the orange VFD.... The hood out of the...

    Preview: Yamaha YP-D10

Another hiatus absolved, with even more rare, eccentric equipment. Enter the Yamaha YP-D10. A couple things: 1: Anti-Skate (bias) linkage is broken. It's a common problem on these things, and it should be simple to fix (but time consuming to make the linkage, my hands don't like working...

An Insiders Look at Best Buy

I wish there was a facepalm icon for crap like this. This whole post was so glaringly filled with one sided, incorrect information that I'm going to dissect this line by line simply out of boredom. So are all the other operating systems, if not managed and understood properly. Some people I'm...

NAS- Never Amazes (me how) Stupid (it can be)

While a DIY solution would probably be slightly cheaper, and possibly easier to work bugs out of, the dedicated boxes are usually smaller, take less power, and have enough adequate cooling to sufficiently keep the drives from cooking. This means that there is less noise. Notice I did not say...

Windows 7 or Windows 8 for HTPC?

I'm using a Mac mini. Built in HDMI port, combo optical/analog input/output jacks for those that want a dedicated hookup to a receiver, an easy to use underscan setting for the TV (the DLP is strange when it comes to computer hookups), built in WiFi, Bluetooth, and it works with the iPod dock...

Ugly and expensive..an Audiophile's first love?

I'm going with my old departed BIC American speakers.... beat to hell and was expensive to me ($100) at the time. But, yeah, they actually sounded like speakers, instead of annoying plastic rattling boxes which I had up until that point. They were ugly from destruction and neglect when I...

RED RAY PLAYERS - Here we go... again!!

PPI matters a bit more on handheld devices, such as phones and tablets, as your typically very very close to the screen to read or watch something (at least in my experience). My DLP TV... can be as close to arm and a half length away playing games, but watching movies is a 10 foot away deal...

    Yamaha P2250 Amp

Hard to tell without having a first hand look at it by a competent technician. But, it could be a multitude of problems. Have you tried another source? Eh, it's worth a shot. This unit uses a temperature sensor(s) in conjunction with the fan circuit. By default, the fan runs at low speed...

    Yamaha DSP-A1000

Wow, kind of surprised this is still active :D For the time being, the A-1000 is retired; the input selector switch is having some slight issues, and instead of making it worse, I've decided to let it just set idly by, waiting for me to dissect the switch. Still gobs of power and as long as I...

    Yamaha P2250 Amp

Wowee. Got a chance to run it for more than 3 hours the other night, and it just runs hot. Hotter than the HK AVR I have laying around. Not to mention, the fan CAN indeed move at a higher speed, making it just louder overall. Still a powerful and stable amplifier, just hot and loud :D

    Yamaha P2250 Amp

Active cooling fan. Very quiet unit(at least mine is), appears to be serviceable. Mine had no issues with bearing wear or shaft play, so I left it alone. The only real problem with the amplifier; the fan filter. I took the cover off and found that the reusable element (at least the Yamaha...

    Yamaha P2250 Amp

I've returned from a slumber of sorts. What better way to celebrate my less than stellar return, by producing and putting on public display my new toy? The Yamaha P2250 Power Amplifier. Some of you may remember the P2201 power amp I had a few years ago. I still wish that I didn't get...

    I'm a chameleon.

Not your average (or by any regards) spam message. Scratch that. I've been gone too long. Can't remember when I posted on here last. In audio related news, the only thing recent added is an Adcom source line controller (haha, it has no pre-amp at all technically), because I'm too...

Yamaha ditches signature orange frontpanel display on new A/V receivers

It's not even the color that really bothers me, so much as the faceplate makes the display look cloudy, like a 10 year old took ammonia to plastic and wiped it hard with a paper towel. Blurry, cloudy poop pop-tart.

    Headphone Recommendations

Sony MDR-7506. Under $100, reliable, and parts are rather easy to obtain. Not to mention, they sound great. The MDR-V6 is also essentially the same model. Just get whichever is cheaper.

    New Laptop

My AST still runs, does that count? :D I decided to mess with the brightness tonight; F@CK! It melted my eyes completely out of my sockets. It's insane! I'm almost wondering if they put LED backlights in this one... The P41 series has LED for sure, but Toshiba's web site specs are a bit...
