I would try a lower end Tube amp and speaker placement to start . I love the tube amps , i still have my 4b and rarley gets turned on .

hehe , I prefer my tube amp to my Bryston 4b and my Carver tfm 35 . The tube amp has 2 power supplys and weights close to my Bryston 4b . Tube amp 38 watts per channel = 50 pounds , most is power supply .

I like NAD power vs the mass reciever , but i owned NAD years ago and went to Bryston and the difference was night and day , NAD and my POLK 2bs where life less , but with the Bryston they came alive . I find NAD very flat sounding amps , but much better power than your mass marketed recievers...
