    Bookshelf speakers

I have a pair of these and they are quite surprising for their size and price. Lots of good reviews too. http://www.us.alegriaaudio.com/Ling.htm

    Speaker models and sizes

Since the XO point for the woofer of the 22L is 150Hz it certainly wouldn't be doing much work. I question the validity of spending the extra money for that. The only difference between the 12L and the 21L is the larger cabinet and slight change in the crossover to get a little more bass...

    External Crossover question???

While there are passive external crossovers, digital crossovers are more often what you would see as an external device. They can come in a rack mount chassis as well. Examples are, Behringer Ultra-Drive http://www.zzounds.com/item--BEHDCX2496 Marchand Electronics...

Shielded speakers - what exactly does that mean for moving?

The purpose of shielding a speaker is to allow them to be placed next to CRT style televisions. Shielding a speaker (actually the driver(s) are shielded) typically involves using a second magnet, known as a bucking magnet, on the back of the driver magnet. This keeps the magnetic field from...

    Down-firing sub question

I don't have this issue but I've often wondered why apartment dwellers don't simply use mains with reasonable bass response and add tactile transducers to the furniture for movies. There are products that, while not inexpensive, can actually substitute for subs in certain situations...

    ascend + yamaha

Two different rooms, two different amps, tube and solid state. I'm not saying they're bad, just not what I would call "neutral" but hey, it's just my perspective. My idea of a neutral speaker (other than what I have) is Harbeth but they were out of my price range.

    ascend + yamaha

Yes, the Ascends do claim flat response, however, I don't consider them "neutral". I found them to be bright which is not necessarily a bad thing in home theater but for music....it's not for me. FR does not tell you what a speaker sounds like.

Harman Kardon hkts14 or bose acoustimass 16?

Why tiny speakers? There are some exceptions (although I can't think of any in the mass market) but in most cases those little 2" and 3" drivers need to cross to the bass unit at a frequency that is too high to prevent locatability of the bass frequencies.

A primer into XBL², LMT, and Split Coil Subwoofer design

Didn't Dan answer that already? Perhaps the details you seek relate to the "woofer speed" article on the Adire website. http://www.adireaudio.com/Files/TechPapers/WooferSpeed.pdf The LMT has significantly higher inductance, for starters.

A primer into XBL², LMT, and Split Coil Subwoofer design

XBL^2 - it's not just for woofers anymore Heady stuff but excellent thread. One minor thing, the title suggests that the XBL^2 is just for subwoofer drivers, however, it's also being used in mid-woofers and full range drivers as well (trying to be all humble with my XBL^2 based speakers).

    Truth v. Beauty

Pretty much goin' along with the group here. You can take two different speakers that both measure flat but one will sound completely different from the other. There are a lot of different tweets and woofs out there and they all add their own texture to the sound. Measurement graphs are a...

    Best Internet direct speakers

I justify buying my Alegria Audio speakers this way. Compared to what I heard in the audio stores I'd have to pay several hundred $$ more to get the same quality sound. Even though I did pay to send a pair back to another company I still came out way ahead of buying in a b&m store.

Of the three that I have I like it the best. It's unreleased material that was compiled after her death. Even if you're not impressed with the production I'm betting you'll love the songs. I'm not sure what classifies a tweeter as a supertweeter but I'm guessing it's those with response well...

Yes, I would describe them as "open" sounding. They are wonderful to listen to jazz on. A surprisingly wide soundstage with depth too. I did compare them to the Ascends and while the Ascends are very articulate they came off "sterile" to me and like I said, when Eva hits that high note, watch...
