    Tron Legacy CD Soundtrack Review

I just rode the new Tron ride in Walt Disney World yesterday...and the Tron soundtrack is all over it! Amazing how the music has held up over the years. Very cool ride for anyone who makes it to the Magic Kingdom.

Key to Finding New Generation of Audio Enthusiasts

I just went to my first "audiophile" show in years last week in Tampa, FL (Florida International Audio Expo); even ran into Gene there! I second most of the suggestions in this article, but my biggest gripe was: the type of music played (in nearly every room/demo). The biggest difference between...

    FDA Approves OTC....Audiophile Hearing Aids?

As someone who used to write CD reviews for Audioholics (see sig), hearing loss in my 50's finally led me to wearing (professionally) fitted hearing aids to compensate. I don't wear them all the time, but desperately need them for things like watching TV and hearing in public/meeting settings. I...

Is it Time to Dump the Silver Disc?

There's one key thing you didn't address: the "collectability" of physical media (CDs/LDs/UHDs/whatever). I too have ripped my CD collection (FLAC) to an external HDD, but that's not so easily done with multi-channel (and hi-rez) media. Even if streaming quality were 1:1 equivalent to UHD discs...

HDMI 2.0 Certifies as HDMI 2.1 by Default for 2022?!?

The only thing I can say for sure is: the passing of each new HDMI version brings less standardization (and clarity) to the consumer. I can remember writing about HDMI 2.0a when HDR compliant displays first hit the market, but it seems as though HDMI credibility has gone downhill from there.

    Have Remote Controls Become Obsolete?

How is it that in 2 pages of a Universal Remote thread I don't see a single post about URC remotes (I have owned a URC MX-450 for ~10 years)? Logitech was not the only (or even best) universal remote, so good alternatives still exist. Anyone remember the Memorex CP-8 or Marantz RC-2000 (still...

Yamaha AVENTAGE 2021 AV Receivers Bulk Up on Power and 8K Features

I have found Yamaha firmware updates solid in the past (just like their hardware reliability). In fact, I wrote an article (for Audioholics) back when DTS:X was a firmware update released after their standard product cycle.

    Hearing Protection and Listening Safety

I just picked up on this article/thread and (like you) am a long-time drummer...who now wears hearing-aids. I have known Gene for some time (I occasionally write for Audioholics), and it just so happens the H/A I chose were from Starkey. I finally got to the point where my family got tired of me...

Has Dolby Home Atmos Been a Step Forward for Home Audio?

I think Atmos is a positive step for home audio...when it is "done right". How can a movie like Gravity sound so good when another (even newer mix) like Solo (or nearly any Disney Atmos mix) doesn't? Moreso than other formats, it seems as though an Atmos mix is highly dependent on the...

Cutting through the 4K UHD Confusion

If that "cheap" 4k TV also supports WCG and (some form of) HDR, then most likely yes. The flat-panel TV revolution has finally given us "affordable" large-screen (>40") TVs, which are more likely to display the benefits of 4k resolution. Now 8k is a different story...and that doesn't even...

Cutting through the 4K UHD Confusion

Which is a good thing, because (trying not to get "political") Net Neutrality (as previously defined) was another example of un-necessary regulation over an adequately performing free-market...but that is a discussion for another time/article.

Will Star Trek Discovery Get Cancelled?

Yes, but the difference between early ST:TNG and ST: Discovery is that ST:TNG had the proper "spirit" of Star Trek (it just took them awhile to get "in the groove"). At least we have The Expanse...possibly the best Sci-Fi ever seen on TV (soon to be streaming) with the exception of Babylon 5...

Are Blu-ray & DVD Formats Dead?

Given that the Samsung UDB-K8500 was the worst optical disk player I have ever owned (I went through 3 of them and none could play a disc from beginning-to-end without skipping), I guess it's no great loss. There are other (better options), such as the Panasonic DMP-UB900 I've enjoyed for a...

Do Atmos Add-On Speaker Modules Work?

No...there is another (option)... I have had my overhead Atmos speakers (5.1.2 configuration) mounted high on the side walls (as close to the ceiling as you can get) for almost 3 years now with great results. While this may not fit the purest model of "in ceiling" speakers, it sounds much better...

Dolby Restricting Use of 3rd Party Upmixers on Atmos Products

This doesn't make a lot of sense from the user/consumer perspective (choice is always better). If Dolby is in fact worried about 'quality control', there's a whole lot of other factors that can affect what the user hears (like crappy speakers). This does make me wonder about the implementation...

What's your Speaker Demo Track List?

The only thing about demo material that's changed for me is the format: what used to be LP's are now CD's. They are: John Klemmer - Touch (review here) Steely Dan - Aja (review here) A more recent honorable mention would be Dave Grusin - Migration (review here)

My Favorite Home Theater Receivers of ALL Time

I also owned the Yamaha DSP-A3090...which I also traded for a DSP-A1. If you examine the equipment lists for many of the CD reviews I've done for Audioholics, you will most likely see one of these 2 models listed! In fact, the Yamaha "in store roadshow" conducted at a local stereo shop (long...

Onkyo TX-SR383 7.2-Channel AV Receiver Inflates Power but Not Price

Get to the truth! I hate inflated amplifier specs...not to mention altered definitions of "immersive sound".

The Long Overdue Death of Retail Compact Disc

You CD lovers are motivating me to write another CD Review! One of my favorite artists won a Grammy this year for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album (yes, they still call it album even though it's only available on CD)!
