12V Trigger lead transmission

Hi there,

Recently i just bought a new projector as well as motorised screen. The screen naturally comes with a '12V Trigger Cable' which after doing some research i believe i can use a normal 3.5mm Mono cable like this http://www.amazon.com/Xantech-10-foot-Mono-Cable/dp/B000NNHI4A/ref=sr_1_11/103-8608901-6303858?ie=UTF8&s=hi&qid=1182786160&sr=8-11 (tell me if im wrong). The problem is the room is approximately 6m wide... i dont have a cable that long...

So i was wondering if its possible to use sometthing like https://www.amazon.co.uk/BTT005-Bluetooth-Stereo-Transmitter-Adapter-Black/dp/B005OPPNC6/275-6100040-8090421?ie=UTF8&tag=geo01-21 with https://www.amazon.co.uk/JUSTOP-BTR006-Bluetooth-Wireless-Universal-Black/dp/B005NDDEVQ?ie=UTF8&tag=geo01-21. Would that work and if not do you have any suggestions on what i could do?

Thanks!

No that will not work. It has to be hard wired. You can not transmit DC via the airwaves. The 12 volt trigger works by applying 12 volt DC to a relay to keep the contacts closed and keep the power on to your projector.

Your solution is to build the cable. Just buy the plugs and the correct length of wire and solder the plugs on. You do not need screen lead, just 16 or 18 gauge speaker wire will be fine.

If you don't know how to solder, this is a good time to learn.

Thanks a lot! I didn't think it would so I just wanted to check.

I'm not good at soldering so perfect I can get some practice!

This is a good place to start. Just make sure you keep the wire ends short. Apply a little solder to the wire ends and the plug terminals. Allow enough time for the solder to flow. It flows when it starts to shine.

Now solder the wires to the terminals.

You need a multi meter to make sure you have good connection and especially no shorts.

This may sound like a silly question but becasue it is a trigger cable sending a signal one way i would only need a 16 gauge single wire not the normal double speaker wire?

No you need two. Circuits are called circuits for a reason. Voltage drives current and to have a circuit you need a circle.

The 12 volts drives a current thought the coil of relay and that current needs a return, and preferably via the most direct route possible.

While it might work without the ground return, the return path would be via your house wiring or the signal screens. This could certainly result in hum by setting up a ground loop.

You need the positive on the pin and the ground on the external part of the connector.

I built a trigger wire by taking a short mono 3.5mm ts wire I had lying around, snipping it in half, and splicing in speaker wire. I stripped the ts cable jacket and +/- wires, twisted them with stripped speaker wire (keeping negative and positive wires separate of course), and used heat shrink to secure and insulate the twists. I didn't even bother with solder -- just a pocket knife, heat shrink tubing, and a cigarette lighter. I was completely lazy about it, but I now have a 25' trigger wire that works perfectly.

I could solder it quicker than that!

I didn't have to wait for my pocket knife to heat up. :)

can one use ipod or stereo cable for a trigger?
The cable for those is the right size (1/8" or 3.5mm), but the wrong connections. It uses a TRS (tip/ring/shield) connection instead of just a tip/shield (TS) connection. That's stereo, instead of mono.

I don't solder, so I am a fan of just grabbing a 1/8" mono cable, cutting it in half, then splicing some wire in between the two ends. I typically use cat-5e cable since it's really cheap and I have a ton of cable. I double up the oranges for the tip connection (power) and double up the brown wires for the ground, then just use Dolphin connectors to ensure a solid connection.

They also have 1/8" mono terminal blocks available:
https://www.selloscope.com/bez/CablesOnline-5-Pack-35mm-18-Mono-Male-Plug-to-AV-2/B01J23BUTU

Which allow you to terminate a wire straight into the connector without solder or crimping the wires together. Pretty cool if you want to spend a lot of cash.

This is $4.00...

thanks so much!
You could buy a single cable that will reach from the AVR to the projector but you need to make sure it meets the electric code for in-wall cabling (if it's rated CL2 or CMR, it will be OK). Otherwise, the plugs in the link above will work as long as you use, in-wall rated cable. Speaker cable is fine, or you could use thermostat wire, Cat5e, etc. This is a low current trigger, so the wire gauge isn't an issue.
