Mounting over fireplace...old thread?

So I've got a brick fireplace and looking to mount tv and run cables.

There's an old thread on here that talks about using PowerBridges. Has anyone done anything recent? Is there new and improved options?

Has anyone used HDMI baluns? (hdmi over ethernet) monoprice tech support is trying to sell me on this: monoprice blackbird

it seems like this would save on space by not having to run multiple HDMI, just a few thin cat6 cables.

It supports HDMI video resolutions to 4K@30Hz and 1080p@60Hz, including 3D video

  • HDMI source (receiver, bluray, xbox, etc) into sender box
  • sender box to receiver box using Cat6 (behind the wall cable run?)
  • receiver box into TV using HDMI
  • Boom, HDMI over ethernet...so less cables need to be run.

That looks like a good spot for a projector screen to me. :) If you want to avoid running power and signal wires against that brick, then a projector would be one way to do that.

Re: HDMI cables, just use a Redmere cable. They're thinner than Cat 5.

I'm lost on why you'd need multiple HDMI cables going to your display. Why do you need more than one? DVR, Blu-Ray, game console, PC, and other gadgets all plug into your AVR. AVR plugs into the TV. That's it, just a single cable. Right? You weren't planning to use your TV's built-in speakers were you?

I agree...not sure if the wife will like having a proj. screen hanging there though...and the roof is vaulted, V-ed w/ ceiling fans directly in the middle, so the projector would need to hang pretty low.

I actually have a IN72 that puts out 1080p, but its been collecting dust for years in storage. :(

Yea, I'm not sure if I would need 2 HDMI cables, but just thinking for future proofing it...any reason why I might need more?

It looks like this can run HDR/4k signal...I guess I'm just wondering if it would be better to use the HDMI baluns and run everything over Cat6e...?

I've got:
- TV: Samsung 65'' KS8000 (brand new, still waiting for it to arrive) (& an InFocus 72 projector)
- Denon AVR-X3000 (previous set up...need to check if it can output HDR/4k)
- surround sound speakers (will need to run wires to setup in new house)
- variety of input devices (xbox, roku, chromecast, laptop, etc)

Seriously, I have no life.
A better view of the room, how the previous owners had it set up.
The previous owners had the TV in the right place. Over that fireplace is absolutely the wrong place and a massive mistake.

I agree with TLS Guy, placement of the tv where former owners setup was nice and with that being said, with your tv being place there provides you with more setup options but of course peace will only reside in the camp if the wife is:)...LOL

Good question...We've got a big as truck couch and it seems to fit the room better when facing the fireplace.

The wife's seen HGtV shows where it talks about having the long part of the couch perpendicular to the long dimension of the room, and also to not have competing focal points in the room....the TV wall vs the fireplace wall.

all this gung sheui stuff, i dunno. I agree, it would be much easier if it was mounted on the wall. Attached are some wide angle pics to see.

Seen a lot of audiophile shows on HGTV then, have you? Lots of discussion by the Property Brothers about acoustics and proper placement and distribution of speakers?

Over the fireplace = very bad.

wife took more pics today...big decision. It certainly would be a hell of a lot easier and less work to mount on the wall...but I feel like the room is more open w/ it facing the fireplace.

You don't anticipate the mounting height of the television over the fireplace giving you a crick in your neck? Were you planning on floorstanding speakers or bookshelfs? If bookshelf speakers, would you use stands or put them into the built-ins?

MantelMount has a mount that pivots down to eye level. Also, for the speakers, it looks like there's brackets that attach to the wall mount to hold a center speaker.

speaker bracket
Mantel Mount --> monoprice has one for $150, but its out of stock. :(

Factoring in the need for a center speaker, I think the wiring situation will need to be:
- HDMI cable
- Network Cat6 cable
- 120V power cable
- single speaker cable
All of these would be placed in a mortar line and covered back up, terminating in a faceplate w/ keystones for these, that way the TV and plugs can be changed in the future.

Yeah?
