Default Snow White and the Huntsman

Not bad...my expectations were low, but I ended up really enjoying this. It's not your Disney Snow White, but it does have an evil queen Bit*h, a poison apple, Snow White, a talking mirror and a group of dwarves. The evil queen has deposed the noble king, imprisoning Snow for most of her young life, turning the kingdom into waste and generally treating everybody very badly. Snow escapes, and meets the Huntsman, hoping to regain the throne and restore truth and beauty.

This flick is full of pre-Christian northern European imagery, somewhat like Tolkein (no surprise, he got his material from the same sources); a big expansion on the Grimm story. The cinematography is quite good, the dark forest is scary, and the action works quite well. It's a little too full of digital FX (only a little though) in some places where it wasn't needed, but, for a high-concept sword and sorcery fantasy, it succeeded due to its complete lack of irony or stupidity.

Charlize Theron is now without peer as angry, towering Bitc*, Kristen Stewart is pretty good as Snow and Chris Helmsworth (Huntsman) didn't do much damage. I was surprised to see it as only a 6.9 on IMDB, but hopefully that will come up after more people see it. If you're in the mood, you could easily spend a worse 2 hours.

Was on Vudu as a buy on the 1st and is availble to rent on the 11th. I have no intereset, but the wife seems keen on this one. Maybe I should tell her there is a violent dwarf tossing scene in it ... and lots of embarassing nudity. That way she can invite one of her girlfriends over to watch and leave me out of it .

here's to hoping kristen stewart is forgotten really soon.

this movie would have been a million times better with a lead actress that's REMOTELY "the fairest of them all"

i was rooting for charlize theron the whole movie. i mean, THAT is fairer than charlize theron? c'mon hollywood ... any unknown actress out there would at least have given us some eye candy.

I do think Stewart is good looking, but probably better suited to Joan Jett (Runaways) than Snow White Definitely NOT fairer than Theron; THAT was a huge casting error. She can be a decent actress, but I think Twilight is going to her head.

Wut?? All her roles are nothing but her trademark poker face.
Yes, Twilight financial success definitely got into her head, but calling her decent actress is a bit stretch imo...

I might rent it just for theron and violent dwarf tossing scene

Yeah, well, not a lot of great films under her belt. I liked her in Adventureland and The Runaways. Yes, she is a bit of the same flavor in most of her movies; sort of a female Keanu Reeves.

Fixed that for ya I will probably rent this too.
