Arrow Audioholics On Location #4: Axiom Audio

Summer wouldn’t come to an end properly without my traditional trip to Axiom Audio to check out their latest products under development. This year (as usual) they didn’t disappoint with the introduction of a new flagship subwoofer - the EP800, to take the crown from the EP600, T2 in-wall speakers and a Mini 5.1 compact speaker system. Spend a few days with the fine folks at Axiom and not only will you want to integrate their products into your home theater system, but you’ll want to take a piece of their pride of workmanship and comradeship home with you. Great products and services from a cool company that although maybe isolated up in the hills in Dwight, Ontario, aren’t out of touch with their customer base or market trends.

Nice article Gene. I was quite surprised when I got a tour of the lab when I went there to audition speakers.

Although I lack the high level geek knowledge to appreciate the gear in his lab, it was obvious that Tom was quite proud of his lab. It was also clear that he really really loves what he does at Axiom.

Is that mini system an adaptation of the audiobytes?

It will be interesting to see how the EP800 is priced given recent releases from SVS and HSU.

Great write up and always nice to get a sneak peek at Axiom's newest upcoming gear. That EP800 looks like a beast!

The comment about discussing predictions for future A/V trends got me thinking though. My personal prediction is that the future "big thing" will not more, but rather: less.

What I mean is, I really do not think that more surround channels or higher resolution will be the next popular trend. I really do think the next "big thing" is all about distribution on a more massive scale. The next "milestone" needs to be a new distribution method - likely based on the internet, but far more advanced and widespread than the infrustructure that is currently in use.

I just foresee the elimination of the idea of the computer, television, telephone and videogame systems as seperate devices. Rather, all content will simply be available to all devices, scaled on the fly to optimally fit the display's size and capabilities and ultimately meaning that you no longer need to connect devices to one another in order to migrate data from one platform to another (ie. connecting an iPhone to a computer to transfer files). Rather, all devices will access the same data source, with all content streaming - two-way - to whatever device you are using at that moment.

And for that reason, the efficiency of packing, transmitting and storing data will become paramount. All of that is less condusive to the idea of higher resolutions and more channels of audio. I actually rather think that what we have now with Blu-ray is the highest resolution and audio quality we will ever see and hear. While the old debate of quality vs. quantity may rage on for Audioholics, my own thinking is that both quality and quantity take a back seat to ubiquity.

The order of importance I foresee in the future is: ubiquity, then quantity, then quality.

When I was there, I believe they were discussing a retail price of around $2400 for the EP800.

Cool article. It is nice to see that they have some new products coming out. Did they talk about any new bookshelf or tower speakers in development? Touring their facility seems very interesting.

Yes a new modular speaker system is in the works but it was too early to take pics and discuss. I will wait till next summer

kinda but broken into more components. Not sure I grasped what they are doing yet since its such an early design. The design goal is extreme dynamic range.

    ].
    Interesting, great.
    But
This picture of her, stolen from their website, is exactly what I see every year as I walk towards the lab.

She must be a mannequin if she looks exactly the same year in, year out
